I've recently been stung by the lr bug. I consider myself to be more of a "hunter" but the science of long range shooting has begun to really fascinate me. Reloading equipment to maximize on the capabilities of my preferred .30-06 "hunting" cartridge and better gear have both become necessary. I am currently using a new Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather in .30-06 equipped with a Swaro Z6 1.7-10 scope and fortunately for myself it shoots better than .75moa out of the box. At 300yds+, my high powered binos just aren't cutting it anymore and I need a GOOD spotting scope. "Good" because I know that this is just the beginning and i want to buy "1" spotting scope. I've looked at Swaro's, Zeiss and Leicas and I'm not afraid to spend a few dollars. Any suggestions? Keep in mind that a TRG or AI are probably soon to follow. Thanks in advance

Re: Gear....??????

We are picking up some Swarovski scopes this week from a local dealer that is no longer going to carry Swarovski as they do not sell much of it.
They have:
Model
SLC 8x30
SLC 8x30
SLC  8x50
SLC 8x50B
Habicht SL 10x40
SLC 10x50
SLC 10x50
ATS65 w/20-60x Zoom Eyepiece
STS65HD w/20-60x Zoom Eyepiece
AT80HD w/20-60x Zoom Eyepiece
STS80  w/20-60x Zoom Eyepiece
ATS65HD w/20-60x Zoom Eyepiece
We will be offering these discounted even though technically they are new units and have full warranty as we are buying them as a close-out from another authorized dealer and they are discontinued goods. I will do the post later this week once the gear arrives and has been inspected.

If you are looking for a quality scope and want to stay more around $1000.00 may I suggest the Pentax PF80-ED as it is an excellent scope

Re: Gear....??????

If you only want to buy 1 spotter that will last you a lifetime if you take care of it...it would be tough to go wrong with any of the offerings from Leica, Swarovski, Zeiss, the higher-end Kowa spotters, etc. Yes, you'll pay more up front, but you'll get a LOT in return without the worry of "buyer's remorse" or the need to "upgrade" down the line.

I will also agree with Doug re: the Pentax PF80ED!! I had to select from Zeiss, Leica and others when I bought my Pentax a few years ago and frankly...I'm glad I bought the Pentax for the money I spent (and the money I saved versus buying any of the others). I got the Pentax PF 80ED-A (the angled version of Pentax's 80mm spotter). I got mine with a 20-60x zoom, then picked up a fixed, wide angle 35x, and a Bogen/Manfrotto 055XPRO tripod and head (don't recall the exact head off the top of my...head). It is an excellent scope and one that I have personally used for wildlife/bird observation, and range/field spotting at distances out to 1200yds for target/steel (no...you can't see bullet holes with any scope at near that range). Total spend on the scope, lenses, tripod and head was approx. $1400 with S&H, etc. from a few different sources.

Whatever you do, before you buy make sure to get with Doug re: prices and availability. He can take care of your spotter needs and offers incredible prices!

Re: Gear....??????

Vagrant, my dad is a game warden and he uses a spotting scope everyday. instead of the aspen they issued him he finally bought a Swarovski 20x60-80mm. its a beaut, super clear glass and one thing(out of many) i have found that sets it apart from lower end spotting scopes is its focus at full power which is important when trying to see bullet holes at long distances. he's named it the Hubble after Nasa's "spotting scope." as for the others (pentax, zeiss, leica, kowa and even the Nikon as vman suggested) they are all great companies. good luck and do us a favor and give some feed back on what you decided on. thanks
