I have a Gemtech Quicksand that has always been hit or miss on rifles. Some it has no negative effect on accuracy- while on others it can turn a .75MOA rifle into a 3.5MOA rifle. It was great on my M14 and SCAR and a full sized AR, but a no go on a 6.8 SBR, Ruger Scout Rifle and a few others. I stopped using it and switched to an Omega, but it seems a waste to have it collecting dust. Once in awhile over the years I had contacted Gemtech about repairing it but not one time did I ever hear back. I just saw they are closing up shop so I suspect my options may be getting more limited.

So taking it out trying to figure out what to do, I noticed the back cap can now unscrew (it should have been welded I imagine). I can take it off and the spring out of the back. I am wondering if this was part of the issue, or if its just a failure of the bi-lug mount design? So what are my options? Try and muscle through a warranty repair? See if I can get the bil-ug mount fixed or convert it to a thread on? I imagine Staking Rhino would convert it to a thread on if I cant get Gemtech to.

I would prefer to keep the QD option but if it will negatively affect accuracy then thread on may be the way to go. Just not sure what best to do with this expensive paperweight. Now it may be complicate by the fact that if I ever get a baffle strike no repair by Gemtech will be possible.

Rumors swirling that GemTech is not going to be around much longer. If you want them to service it you should probably act fast. Even then, proceed with caution.

Well I just contacted Gemtech and Stalking Rhino both. Looks like SR isnt taking new orders at this time. I did contact Gemtech and asked about them continuing to offer warranty repairs. They said they arent closing just moving across the street. That said, they dont inspire confidence. They couldnt answer my questions and said the guy who repairs them is out and to try calling again next week sometime...so still no progress with them.

If you need to get it repaired and Gemtech can't/won't help you and since SR is out give Joe a shot. Real nice guy and very honest. He may have you wait a few weeks since his main lathe just recently went down but its still worth a go. If anything he may just be able to repair your can.

I have had good repeatability with mine, but my sample size is only 2 rifles.

As far as I know, the back piece is just threaded on, and it is not designed to be welded. So I would just put a good layer of antiseize paste or barrel installing grease with a high moly content in it on the thread, and then tighten it back on. So you can take it apart to clean if if your really want or need to.

You may want to a smear a small amount of some grease on the interior walls that the spring rides up and and down on. Gemtech recommended suberlube.

Thanks jetlagged. I had long since lost the manual for this one. At least its back to be partly useful. Still interested in getting a new direct thread cap made for it to see if that solves the accuracy issues it creates. Looks like the can could be shortened an inch or two once the QD mounting component is removed....
