I'm thinking about buying a cheap NV scope to try out. Do any of you have any first hand experience with these? Anyone have a good screen shot of what it looks like through the optic? What kind of range are they usually good for? Or am I just wasting my cash?

Don't waist your money or time. @ the Minimum purchase a D-300 gen.-2 Israeli built model .
Gen-1 anything will be a real letdown. The D-300 models are kickass for foot travel and will be GTG for 50-100 yrd. with some moonlight or some IR supplement .

Re: Gen 1 night vision

i have got to disagree with the previous comments. I own an ATN gen 1 scope and could not be happier out to 100 yards for the money.

Now before you judge i have leouplds and zeisses on top of my rifles, but for my ar a gen one on one upper and a red dot on another suits me just fine.

I can fire a three inch group at 100, and it gets me well within nuisance deer range. it cost me five hundred bucks as opposed to 3000.

I have used awesome nods in the millitary, and for my purposes i did not need them that good.

If you want to shoot deer at 100 and closer, get gen one, you will be satisfied. if you want to impress your friends or seriously take shots longer than 150 get something better.

If it "really matters" your unit would be supplying it to you at no cost (if you don't count you signing your life away for it)

Best deal on earth,----> order form cabelas and if you don't like gen one return it right away and get your money back. At least then you can decide.

What is the price on the D300 gen2 units? are they a scope or just a monocular?

Re: Gen 1 night vision

Armymedic, That't pretty much what I want it for. Just something cheap to be able to shoot nuisance hogs at 100yds or less. Then If I decide I want a better optic I can shell out for it later. I wasn't sure what the range would be on the cheaper ones but if I can make out a pig at 100 thats plenty good for now. The Cabelas route sounds good, I may have to do that.

I appreciate the advice from the others as well but I really want to try it out before I spend $2500+ for a gen 3.

Re: Gen 1 night vision

I would say a Gen 2 at least. The D300 mentioned is a good unit for the money. The thing with NV is that even if you decide you don't like it or want something better, you can usually get most of your money back. Start with a Gen 2 and then go to Gen 3. AAnd I hate to say it but Arfcom has a pretty good NV thread under the Armory section. Lots of good reads because the TNVC guy chimes in about every 5 minutes to explain some things.

Re: Gen 1 night vision

Had an older gen one on a 22 for a while and it worked very well inside 75 yards or so. I mean, its not exactly clear or anything spectacular, bit i would not have had issues nailing hogs or other pests with it. For the price, it is something worth playing with if you cant or dont need to pull gen 2 or 3.

+1 with many folks here about really starting with at least a Gen 2 scope to begin with....
