Ok I just saw a clip of this show I have never heard of it before I dont have HBO what I would like to know is is it entertaining? and does it make the Marines look good I dont care if thats not the way it realy happened or anything else just entertainment value and if it casts a good light on the marines. If you have seen it let me know if its worth my time
Thanks

Re: Generation Kill???

Good show. Book was great as well.

Show was based on a book that was written by an imbedded reporter. Follows the book more or less.

I believe a couple of the actual marines played themselves in it.

It was a miniseries that was based on a book. There aren't any seasons of Generation Kill.

Re: Generation Kill???

As a USMC 0311, I liked it.

I'd say it depicted us in a semi-bad sort of light. A lot of civilians were killed. But that's just how war is, craziness.

I think that a lot of people who haven't been in the military will find it hard to watch and go, "Whoa - they just got shot up, almost died - and cracked jokes about it right afterwards!". Yeah. All about releaving the stress.

I kinda felt the opposite of that. They showed how unavoidable the killing of the civilians was, and the regret and dislike that followed it.

Re: Generation Kill???

I watched the show and liked it for the most part at first
but i think i was just desperat for a descent quality
movie/show that depicted some of what people are
experiencing in this war. But now that i give it some
thought and have talked to friends of mine that were
in that unit at the time and i dont like it so much.
I never saw anybody there act like such babies especially
when they wanted to stop everything in the middle of the
push to bahgdad for the wounded kid, i found it sort of
perplexing, and some people were wrongly portrayed as well
but thats allways going to happen when its going off of
one persons perspective so no big deal. And Rudy Reyes
is probubly one of the biggest D bags ive met in my life.
But anyway its just my opinion, it isnt worth much.

Re: GRRROMMMMMMMMINNNNNAAAAAINN STANDARDS

Good book and movie, and worth watching. I have some great friends that were in that battalion, and a very close friend that was featured in the book.

A year or so ago, this very same thread ran to about 8 or 9 pages. I think it was where someone smartly pointed out that in a good unit, "character assassination was the rule of the day."

Remember that what you read and see are from the eyes (perspective) of a Rolling Stone reporter. "Dispatches" was done in the same way for VietNam. IF you watch and see the craziness of it all, he will have served his purpose. If you see brothers ride each other mercilessly and still find humor amidst all the madness, then you have probably questioned the chain-of-command, worked with some butthead that was overly focused on your hair length, and taken a dump in a ditch with 4 or 5 of your closest friends...

Hollywood, or HBO as it were, has to spice things up a bit but they cannot pipe in the smells. Take fear, for instance.

Media, whether print or screen, cannot propel everyone beyond one dimension.

Re: Generation Kill

Interestingly Rudy Reyes played himself. I do not thing I would call him "fruity" in front of his face

that "homo" as you put it. could pummel you 10 times and not break a sweat. He did a good job in the series and tried to make it real as possible.

Re: Generation Kill???

Slapchop,

I do not know that Marine at all. Never met him. But what I do see is a person trying to fit in to the entertainment industry to get more work.

I ASSUME he wants to be a actor and is acting as the people he has met down that road.

I hope he does reach his goals as I wish that for everyone.

Re: Generation Kill???

good series, better book. you need to watch the video of the after talk. they point out things played up for the show and somethings that were actually so.

Search youtube for the videos made during the event, you can hear god father doing a team meeting etc.

You got something going on with Fruity Rudy? Yeah bud I've seen the series, he did do a great job. Could he pummel me in 10 seconds, yes, in fact he could pummel myself and you at the same time in 10 seconds. So breathe relax and calm the fuck down will you? Have a cup of coffee or something there bud.
