In a lot of those cases, the "family" never cared about these people while they were alive. They only pretend to care and to grieve after something like that happens so they can collect a check.
There is a mentally challenged guy living in my neighborhood whose mother just lets him run around the streets partially naked and covered in dirt every day, eating out of restaurant compost bins and sidewalks and babbling to himself. One time he got knocked down by a car doing a left turn within view of his house... He wasn't really injured though, as was evident once the EMS arrived on scene, but the guy's mother came rushing out and literally swarmed at the driver who remained on scene and cooperated with the first responders, screeching like a banshee, howling threats of lawsuits at him, and then switching to crying about "my baby, my boy"...
Um, lady, based on the entire neighborhood's witness accounts for the past 7+ years, it did not seem like you cared that much for your son 99% of the time...
There have also been other accounts of people being left alone in senior care facilities for years with no visitors, but once they passed, suddenly all those relatives descended down like vultures to pick clean everything they had in their room and file paperwork regarding estates, while alternating between pretending to cry and posting nonsense on Facebook on their phones... However, they do not deceive the eagle eyes of those who are well acquainted with the gritty and nasty side of the human psyche though...
People can be worse than sacks of shit... At least you can fertilize cropland with real shit. These people are even less...

There are also family members that act like their father's brother meant the world to them and then sue to try to take everything from their father's brother's family or offer them substantially less than market value (pennies on dollar) . Like if they really cared, would they do something like that?
That guy in AZ was an idiot - how many opportunities did they give him. The lady in CA gave the guy a chance with the knife, but this guy flat out blew it. Most LE would have you out of the car by the point he grabbed gun for not following orders. What was amazing was the onslaught of lead and the guy was still moving!! Sounded like a full up auto.
Common denominator here: People suck...want a friend...go get a dog or dogs. They'll likely never let you down and even if they do, they didn't do it on purpose and you can overlook the occasional mess-up.

Being a cop is so incredibly difficult. There are hundreds of interactions like this every day where guys have to make life and death decisions, and the vast majority of them get it right every time. We don’t pay them enough.
