Michigan youth hunt is this coming weekend, my 14 year boy practiced with the 6.5 Grendel and 308 Savage today on 4 inch steel targets and paper for pin point shooting, out to 300 yards, while the savage in 308 was superior in accuracy the 6.5 Grendel was close behind, he ended up getting consecutive 1 shot hits at 100, 200 and 300 yards with both, so he decided to use the Grendel, we will be using Hornandy 123 Grain amax, with viper PST scope

looking forward to his first deer, the food plot is only 340 yards across so he will do fine

Re: Getting ready for Youth hunt

Should be a good time. Taking your first deer is always exciting. My first wasn't anywhere near that distance. I'm glad it wasn't either. My heart was pounding so much, I'm surprised I hit it at all. Good luck to you and your boy!

Re: Getting ready for Youth hunt

Ours is this Saturday as well and my son (who is turning 10 in Oct.) and I will be in the mountains early. He has a Rem.700 youth model in .243 and can hold about 1.5 MOA at 100 yards when he does not slap the trigger.
We know where a couple of bucks are so hopefully he will get his first.
In truth, he will probably be so excited he will miss but we will see.
Good luck!

I wish you and your son the best of luck. That's going to be a memory he has with you the rest of his life. Post a pic if he gets one.

How are you liking that PST so far? I ask because, I'm strongly considering selling my NF to buy 2 of those PST/SFP/4-16x. (I have 2 AR's that need glass.)

Thanks,

You should film it.

I remember my first deer hunt. My grandpa took me out and we hunted all day then after we were getting ready to go back to camp we came across a deer going to a water hole. I nice mule deer buck. I asked if I should shoot it. Grandpa said “If you wa (bang) nt to. Nice shot!” It kicked one time and fell and then rolled down the hill.

I have made better shots since then but none are burned in like that first one.
