New to handguns and well it shows hehe. The first target was mostly slow pressing to the rear, with a little jerking, I find myself not being able to hold that steady freehand, as i said new to handguns and used to shooting a rifle which i can hold much more steady. All in all on the first target i wasn't too disappointed vertical stringing is more favorable than horizontal IMO and the majority was just high. This was done at 15yds offhand. The thing is, I know a slow press to the rear is the only way to seriously accurately shoot, but i find that my grip loosens some and i gain more muzzle flip when pressing to the rear on a handgun. Went through 70+ rounds gone through 200rds overall seriously got to get off my ass and get some berry bullets and primers and start loading.

    Using this grip

2nd attempt today as the first part of this was done two days ago, i've been absent of the forum for a bit though.

Rapid fire? Slow fire? Timed? Two hand as demonstrated in the video? If those are pretty much your first handgun targets you haven't shot enough to be discouraged yet. It isn't the same as rifle by far and you'll be a while. One thing to watch out for is going left (for a right handed person) because of leaning over the sights. You need to pick the pistol up into your natural line of sight, rather than moving the head to acquire the sights.

Not bad for just starting. I would recommend you do some "dry fire" practice concentrating on the front sight and having it remain on target through the trigger press and follow through. You'll improve at a faster rate and save money too!

The Glock trigger can be a bit funny to have as your first one so don't despair. You just have to dry fire a lot and gets used to it then it becomes much easier.

I do dry fire and practice my grip alot, but i need to do a loaded drill and see if i'm moving or anything. Because when there isn't a round in the chamber dry firing is easy as is trigger control and consistency, anticipating the boom however when it's loaded does get to me sometimes. Also trying to keep my wrist from breaking is pretty hard, because when i do a slow press to the rear my grip isn't as tight, as i'm a little more relaxed.

I used to shoot like that with my handguns. Try dry fire practice like others have mentioned. I dry fired many times a day when I first started shooting, concentrating on not moving the front sight. Now I am a very decent pistol shooter, and can ring steel at 110yds.

Not that an "apples and oranges" comparison is entirely valid, but here's an example of something from today:

I ran into a forum buddy (not from here, but I think he has a log-on here too, any way) at the range, and invited him to try a cylinderful on a custom 3" S&W 65-4 that I picked up last year, pretty much soup-to-nuts except for the lack of a beveled cylinder.

He ran the target out to five yards and proceeded to get abused by the pretty much full-on 158gr JSPs, shooting the first one DA, and then trying the last five SA with an "X" POA. Five landed, one got lost over the side, and since this was about the first or second time he had ever fired a revolver, let alone a .357 Magnum, neither of us were surprised by his results.

My cylinderful was all DA, with an "upper lip" POA on the silhouette, and with hands incapable of maintaining a perfect 50/50 grip any more (thank you, proximal row carpectomy), I turned in a group that was 1/3 to 1/4 the size of his. The difference? General experience (25 yrs. to his 5, tops), number one, fleeting familiarity with revolvers, number two, and some familiarity with this particular specimen, through which I have perhaps 300 rounds, maximum, mostly .38 Special.

Now, I don't think that I'm especially hot shit with anything, but the greatest factor separating the two of us, aside from my disintegrating vision and his youth, is experience, having learned good habits and then putting them into practice. OP, once you learn good technique, everything else to get where you want to be is "time on target."

Re: Glock 21 Gen 4 range report. Suggestions?

First of all hanguns in general are for 5, 10, 15 yards. I would start at 5 yards, get comfortable and it will help you build your confidence. Particularly if your getting into handguns for self defense. Most deadly encounters happen at 7 feet or something like that. Think about being in your home, not many rooms where your gonna have to shoot 30'. If you just want to target practice starting up close is still a great way to build confidence. Then when your getting nice tight groups move out to the longer ranges.

Finally got to loading. Loaded up 50rds with 6.5gr of Unique and 50rds with 5.8gr of Winchester 231. This was offhand at 10yds. Both are 40 shot groups

lol couldn't help from shooting, was a little fatigued afterwords too which i thought was strange. Anyhow i also just picked up some Underwood ammo speer gold dots +p 230gr HPs rated at 1000fps and there is a noticeable difference in felt recoil. While i haven't chronoed either of these they are both rated in the 800+ range or so the book says, but winchester 231 had less felt recoil to me, I also shot it better as it's more in the center of the target. So what do ya'll think?

    Load data:
    Starline Brass
    Berry plated 230gr FMJ
    FGMM large pistol primers.

    Check out these targets: http://www.pistoleer.com/targets/handgun/.

The way I like to train at a static range is to put all rounds into a target at my chosen distance. Once I can put an entire magazine exactly where I want it, then I move back from the target stand another 3 yards and try again. Once I find the range where I cannot deliberately put all rounds within the circle, that's where I practice until I get it right.

You should also check out some local IDPA and IPSC matches. They'll really improve your pistol shooting ability, and they're a hell of a lot more fun than just shooting paper targets at static distances.

I'm not sure how many local matches there are around my area.
