Hey guys, I’m in the market for a G17 and wondering if I could get a little guidance. I want to add an RDS, but I’m only finding the MOS model for about 250$ more than the standard model. Does anyone have experience with the various dovetail plates that allow the user to mount the RDS on the standard slide. If they are crap, I will just spend the extra for the MOS.
What would y’all do? Save a couple hundred and go with the dovetail plate, or spend the extra for the MOS cut? If your choice is the first option, what plate do you like?

    Everything is relative.

Plenty of people seem to make it work. If you want to be able to use your factory height sights, you may have issues.

It works, just is not optimal. The adapter plate ends up taking away space that could be filled by the optic, lowering the overall height and putting the optic deeper in the pocket.

The MOS system is less than ideal, you need a plate for everything and the plate system puts all the sheer force on some very small screws.

If you already own a gen 3 or gen 4 glock you can buy a milled slide from Brownells for about $240. They licensed the Zev slide milling design for an RMR that is much better than the MOS system.

No no no to the MOS system.

Buy the standard G17 of your preferred flavor, send it out for a Trijicon RMR cut (I've used Suarez International for several and was happy with the work performed), have the slide refinished in nitride or DLC, and get some good suppressor-height sights installed.

Thanks guys. I have stepped back from the ledge that is the MOS system. For the sake of discussion, does anyone have any thoughts on the Streamlight TLR8? This could be any easy way to mount a light and laser for quicker target acquisition and not require sending parts out for modification. Just trying to hear all ideas. Thanks again to everyone providing advice.

If you want to be able to swap optics as new stuff becomes available, Agency & Unity both make interchangeable plate systems that are far superior to the MOS.
