good 308 load

Re: good 308 load

I have had good luck with both 175 SMKs, 175 VLDs (Berger), 155 VLDs, and 155 Lapua Scenars. With the 175s, 44.0gr of Varget should get you in the 2650-2660 fps range (Lapua brass). With the 155s, you will want to shoot for the 2900 and above range, 46gr of Varget (Lapua brass) is close, I think you will wind up at 46.6 to 46.8 to get to 2950 fps.

As always, work up with your loads, I have found all these loads and velocities with a Rock Creek 24" 1/10 twist barrel, but work up none the less.

IMR 4064
IMR 4895
IMR 3031
Varget
RE-15

Plus others are all good powders for the 308 caliber. You need to decide on what you are going to do with it, (hunting, plinking steel or punching paper) then decide what range. Then you can decide what bullet. I have 2 basic loads. 150 flat base for close range, out to 300 yards. And Berger 175s (non VLD) for longer ranges out to 1K.

Matching the right bullet with the right powder is 80% of getting a good accurate load.

Wasn't this what John was running Saturday? Justin (from Bragg) also mentioned the 155 Scenar yesterday, seems they are very popular with the more experienced shooters.

Are there any issues with wind at longer ranges, or does the high BC/SD negate the concerns usually associated with lighter weight bullets? What about stability past 600 yards?

Re: good 308 load

take a lake city case shove a ccibr2 primer in it, stuff 41.5grains of imr4064 in ther and plug up the hole with a 175 grain sierra matchking around lands length. good luck and good shooting.

Re: good 308 load

I am a little different:
GAP M40A3 Bartlein 1:11.27 MTU Barrel
Winchester 748 - 44.2 Grains
Lapua Brass
Federal 210M Primer
2650FPS
2.850 COAL - .20 off the lands

I know people load Varget and RE15 but then again whenever I look for those powders they are always out of stock. I usually can find 748 pretty easy.

Re: good 308 load

I wouldn't START with 46 gr. of Varget on most 165s. For both my .308s that ended up being a compressed load when seated to 2.81 and started flattening primers.

I think powdervalley has re15 in stock.

I can never find anything but accurate powders and magnum primers so that's what I've been using. Mag CCI primers have been working great compared to the WLR ones I had earlier.
