I am and I am not even a REAL bench rest or competition guy ... , Thunder Stick Im thinking about a 21.75" fat boy ,.223rem barrel on my next mod 70 truck gun project barrel, its now a Sporter Varmint with a 26" med heavy hammer forged barrel that is to long to be handy in the truck + it has a 1 in 12 twist barrel that limits me to 55 gr pills ,Im thinking 1 in 9 or 10 turns at 21.75 finish length, fat to shoot the fed GGM 69 gr smk's

The reason that I said "pseudo-science" is because they have wrongly attributed the Cause and Effect relationship in that article on several occasions. Some of them are discussed on this forum regularly, some are not. Almost all of which are known by the elite rifle builders and much of it is considered "Trade Secret".

The results are excellent no doubt. The explanation of WHY they are excellent falls short.

WHY is the important part, just copying what they did doesn't beget understanding or allow for improvement or even troubleshooting if your parroting doesn't work as well.

Psuedo-science, not usefulness.

Roger that Mr Bohem, 16 years of cropdusting made me quit getting bogged down in details and " just do it, send it ".... LOL I love to hear the 1340 P & W radial bellow but will not sit behind another one after 7000 hrs in behind a P & W PT 6 -15. thanks

Re: Good accuracy read

It is a fun article to read but I too think it's arbitrary to say that 21.75" is a magic length for any caliber or load. Seems necessary to take into account the barrel diameter, contour and overall length...maybe even the material and the stiffness of the action. I've had .308s in 20" and 24" and got results with both.

Oh yes... those are music!

All the stuff I do now is turbine powered but those old radials are fantastic to listen to. Not quite the 'charged RR Merlin but excellent nonetheless

Bingo. Yet another failure to close the observation/hypothesis loop.

Still an interesting article, though.

I read this some time back, IIRC based on something posted here?
I found this to be a fascinating story, but as you have noted, sorely lacking in detail.

But that didn't, for me at least, reduce the appeal of the story and my fascination with the confluence of events that created this opportunity for the people involved and the amazing results.
I was (perhaps to a limited audience) a historic place and time that it would have been incredibly cool to have "been there".
But, maybe that's just me?
