Whats the cheapest RELIABLE handgun, preferably in 9mm that I could buy a few of, and hide around the house, and not break my pocket? Anything you guys have used and reccomend? I have alot of experience with handguns, just never any of the cheaper ones. What do you guys think?

Maybe a little higher now, but if you watch you can find them. Sig Sauer P6 or P225 single stack 9mm. They fit smaller hands very well too.

S&W Sigma's aren't bad (at least the newer versions) - they're pretty much Glock clones and pretty cheap the last time I checked.

My Kel-tec has served me well once it was broken in.

Though some will disagree... We have a couple Taurus Millenium Pro's and neither of them have ever had a malfunction out of thousands of rounds and I think we got them for like $325 a piece at the time, no idea what the current price is though.

I have a couple of makarovs that I keep in the Garage and Kitchen. I got both for abut $225. They are small, cheap and reliable(in my experiance). Hornady sells a nice little XTP hollow point amunition for the Mac.

I've got a bunch of little fingers around the house, so its a definate no-go for me...but I've got a couple CZ-82s that fit that bill. May not be the perfect solution, but mine have proven reliable without breaking the bank. my $.02.

Buying an LE trade in is a great deal. Most of them have been shot less than the pistols you see coming up for sale here. If it is a Glock, replace the recoil spring, possibly the guide rod, and make sure the mags are up to snuff.

Does it have to be a 9mm? If not, I would go with a .357 revolver, something like an inexpensive Rossi. I paid somewhere around $325 for one brand new and absolutely love it for the price. I plan to buy a few more for the exact same reason you mentioned.

The one I have is stainless steel, which could'nt have been a better choice for what you're talking about because it tends to get neglected. Just a simple wipe, and she looks brand new.

You are running the risk of buying weapon with a much stronger probability of malfunctioning when you get into inexpensive semi auto's; opposed to the inherent reliability of a revolver.

My experience with police turn ins is they are either really ugly and barely shot or really ugly and shot out, probably a 70 - 30 split. Odds are you will get a good gun that you would be proud to hide. LOL

Revolver.

Theres no spring tension on it, and you can leave for years and years with it loaded, and not worry if it'll go bang when you draw it. Theres a story floating around about a old guy that hid a revolver for 30 years in his couch cushion, and used it one night when someone broke it. He missed, but it worked.

I would second the recommendation for a revolver, but whatever gun you choose be sure to write down the serial numbers as you would not believe how many guns get stolen from a home or vehicle, and there is no way to trace them as the homeowner did not have the serial numbers. I know that most everyone on this board would already have that info, but it is just a little reminder.

+1 on a Glock LE trade in. If you take it to a GSSF match they have armorers on sight that will go through it for you. The matches I've been to it didn't even looked like it cost anything and they were putting new springs, guide rods, etc. in. I didn't take part b/c mine isn't factory on purpose but it's a good deal if you want a factory pistol.

If a revolver will work, and I see nothing wrong with them, I saw on another site the J&G Sales had S&W M10's for under $200. I'd MUCH rather have a M10 than a semi of questionable quality.

If you mean that many (not all) LE normally place the weapon in its holster before patrol, remove said weapon after patrol, and repeat the next patrol. My dad shot a lot more than most local agencies (he is retired FHP). Many of the smaller agencies shot quarterly and some even semi annually. Check the weapon over before you buy, but they ARE a great and safe deal.

Secondly, I am by no means calling you a liar. I am truly wondering where you get new Glocks for "431 out the door". If you are talking about the blue label, the lowest Glock told me over the phone was 425 before tax. That was 160 bucks better than the local store listed, and I was happy to pick one up on blue label. Unless the OP is military or LEO, he is not going to be able to enjoy that discount and is going to pay closer to 500 before tax.

All that said, a police turn in at 300 is going to serve him just fine, be just as reliable, and will most likely outlast him. The revolver recommendations are also wise ones. Even if the weapon has something wrong with it, you could send it back and get it fixed.

You have tons of weapons getting turned in by police forces. Whether they are Glocks, Sigs, HK P7s, etc most are going to work fine. That is specifically why you shoot the weapon 500-1000 times or more before you trust your life to it.

Over the years, I've bought three Charter 2000 Off-Duty .38 Spls. One lives in the map pocket of the driver's side door of my car. The other two live in nooks and crannies about the house, strategically located in the places where I potentially could be surprised by an intruder while I'm more than arm's length away from a long gun. I figure that's enough gun to fight my way to my bazooka.

Better safe then sorry. I would rather be labeled as paranoid and have nothing happen my whole life, then not prepare and have something happen once.

Also a new glock is a great idea, but when you need to buy 4 guns that you wont be shooting much, and im not rich, starts to be a bad idea.

I know you said handguns but I like to have a good old shotgun in the mix and it can just be a cheap handy rifle or an old mossberg / remington 12 or 20 gauge with 00 buck or slugs. And for pistols I would consider a Taurus double action revolver 357mag,38,45LC,44mag or even a single action Ruger in those calibers. Look for a rough one to make it cheaper to purchase.

You don't have to have the most fantastic ubber automatic to make an intruder graveyard dead.

Don't hide guns around the house,... use everyday items that exceed a pistols stopping power and can be hid in plain sight.

Think out of the box, and never let it be known what you'll use or have when needed.

The NRA certified instructor wants to buy cheap handguns to hide around the house so that his guests or children might find them and shoot themselves with. They should revoke your firearms instructor status ASAP.

Buy one good firearm and carry it on your person or sleep next to it. Done.

Wow we have some idiots in the house huh. There was an incident couple months back where 2 armed fellas from detroit took a family hostage in their own home. The husband, wife, and 2 children were in the house held against their will while the house was surrounded by police because a neighbor had alerted police to suspicious activity. Now household items would be nice if you were Chuck Norris, but I would like for myself or my wife to go to the bathroom or whatever, however, place 2 nice shots in a couple fellas heads.

If some of you idiots have a hard time hiding things so children and guests can't find them, maybe a little more creativity is needed.

I also find it hilarious that you guys carry your "good" gun around your house.

One thing to think about is how quickly can you get to the hidden guns (time to remember where it is, get to it, pull it out and bring it into ready).

I keep a couple shotguns and pistols stored around the bedroom and one evening while at my desk, I heard what sounded like someone kicking in a door. I was surprised and annoyed at how long it took to grab a shotgun from 3 feet away under the bed, and bring it up and be ready to confront someone. (Fortunately it turned out to be just some heavy stuff falling over and hitting the door).

My suggestion for actually being ready to grab something would be a couple good handguns that are really handy, such as carry one on your belt at home, then put it on your bedside table or under the pillow when you got to sleep, then maybe one in your desk drawer or toolbox drawer in the garage or such other place around the house that you spend a lot of time, maybe add a shotgun beside the bed &/or a holster hidden in the sofa if you watch a lot of TV, but that would depend on if you have family, kids or friends that come over and would accidentally find it.

If that is the same story that I'm thinking of that was posted here earlier, after the criminals broke in, they beat the husband over the head, tied him up in the basement, as well as tied up the daughters to their beds and held the mother at gunpoint. They weren't about to let someone go to the bathroom to be nice. I think the only chance for the family would have been if the father or mother had been actually carrying a gun on them in the house and pulled it out the moment the bad guys entered and started shooting at them without hesitation (or possibly if after the bank teller put in the call, the police had rushed in right away, maybe a few less would have died, but hard to say)

Kids are pretty much hardwired to explore and find things and if you can get to something you hid, chances are if you have kids in your house, they will find it one day too if they want to find it. The only really sure way is to lock it up or keep it in a locked room/drawer/safe etc. Leaving a loaded gun hidden in the house but not locked up when kids are around is inviting trouble.

It's a matter of not needing to make a compromise. When doing concealed carry, you have to sacrifice having a really good big accurate gun for something you can hide easily (because it's either small and hideable or none at all). But at home when hiding is not needed, the pistols that I have out are big and accurate, simply because if I know I'm more accurate with one of my big HK 45 full size combat pistols than my little 380 pocket pistol and if my life or the lives of my loved ones come into play at home, I want to be using the best tool possible.

Next time you are at the range, get a standard hostage target (hostage in front, bad guy behind and slightly exposed) then from about 15 feet away, (about the average room size) draw your gun and bring it up and try landing 3 to 4 bullets on the bad guy without being able to take your time to aim. At least for me, with a full sized combat pistol I do well, but with a pocket pistol, sometimes one of the shots goes where it is not supposed to.

I don't carry my "good" gun around the house because I made a "better" decision where my family lives. My statement supported protecting you and yours with the prime weapon you would be proficient with, hows that hilarious?

If your "hidden" guns scattered around the house are not secured in something that locks, one break in and you move to the front of the line to help supply kids and criminals with firearms. Nice move.

I don't know about Michigan, but in Texas if a child has access to an unsecured firearm in your house and it goes off, you go to jail. It is illegal for a child to have unrestricted access to firearms. Good luck.

Hilarious (and sad) is that you guys lounge around your house carrying your firearm. I mean come on, really? Even at home your carrying your firearms around? My children have been taught about firearms since they were 3. I dont allow it to be a curiousity that taunts them the second I turn my head. As the title states, I am a firearms instructor, so my idea of leaving firearms around the house probably isnt what you guys are thinking of.

That's the only way I would have a handgun ready for use for self defense with children in the house. But before putting one of those into service,I would try my best to see if it can be pryed or hammered open. What you can't count on is the upbringing of your childrens friends. My neighbors daughters one friend is constantly being caught going through the mothers personal belongings. A hidden handgun accessable to a kid like that has let to funerals. Back to your original question, a used Glock.

You talk about how your idea of "leaving weapons around the house" probably isn't what the guys here are thinking of. You post a link to a little bitty lock box big enough to keep a pistol in. I am just curious as to whether you've taken time to really think about this.

Say you have a lock box under the couch cushion, or under the couch, or in your ottoman, or whatever. Three guys bust open your door. You take the key to your lockbox out of your pocket (you are carrying that little key around in your lounge pants, right? It's not on your dresser in the bedroom or anything?). You flip your cushion, couch, ottoman, or whatever, and grab the box. You slide the key in, turn it, pop the box open, grab your gun, bring it up, and place six shots with deadly accuracy into your intruders.

You're counting on getting the key out of your pocket without fumbling it, if it's even on your person to begin with; grabbing the closest box, supposing you remember exactly where it is and no other member of the family is sitting on it; getting that little key in that little hole smoothly; then drawing and firing <span style="font-style: italic">in the time it takes people to kick open your door or window and get to you</span>.

How exactly is that smarter than the person who carries his gun on his hip until he goes to bed? That person counts on drawing their gun and being on target in the time it takes someone to kick open their door or window and come into view. I'm not trying to insult you, I'm just asking you to think about both your strategy and your logic behind it.

Don't laugh at people who are at the ready in their own home when you haven't logically considered all the steps involved to get to your own weapon. You yourself said, "Better safe then sorry. Bad guys don't give notice they're dropping by to hold you hostage and rape your wife while your kids watch. Topo sniper, you have to be the biggest idiot ever. I am on a forum trying to find out things I do not know. I unlike you, do not know everything or even come close. You on the other hand all ready know everything and your also a psychic, knowing how people will hide things etc. Do I know how to shoot, yes, do I own firearms, yes. Do I have any experience with $200-$300 firearms? No. So stfu, act smart somewhere else.

The key for the keypad is an override. If my exterior security door, cant hold someone back for 10 seconds for me to grab my gun, wtf! Swat takes 4 or 5 swings on security doors with the battaring ram before it opens.

You guys assume to know how everyone is going to hide things safely, let me figure that out, you guys either recommend a good reliable firearm in the $200-300 range or find a different thread that you think requires your stupidity.

Not to stray too far off topic,but a good,aware dog can buy you more time than you can possibly imagine if the bad guys come around.Not a K9 attack dog either,mine is a great Lab Mix and nobody or nothing comes anywhere close to home without me knowing it well in advance.

After you get past how stupid that sounds, you don't really state anything in support of your original question that makes you sound like you've mentally evolved past about 12.

1,096 unintentional child firearm deaths occured between 1999 and 2007. That pisses me the FUCK off, so no I do not take that lightly. A child gets hurt from some morons stupidity, that asshole should fucking hang. You say something half-assed that sounds like that, you get what you got.

Instead of having a bunch of guns around the house that some burglar will find while attempting to steal your stuff might i suggest one gun that you can carry concealed while in the house you don’t need a permit to carry if you’re in your own home.
