Update
First let me respond to McCrazy since I was traveling...
I live on the NE of TN, but we were looking all over for a Class III shop. I had one right down the street from me, but I'll get to that in a minute.
Thank you for the suggestions, lot's of good options. No one mentioned the shop that just went up near my house, but I would like to discuss my experience with them.
All figured, it will take a year to put together the rifle I want. With the waiting period on the stock I am pretty much at their mercy. I went to Big Iron Munitions off of Tiny Town Rd. in Clarksville, TN and you can tell that they aren't there to sell you a lot of hype. Everything you need to see is sitting in back ready to build anyway. The guys knew their business, even had an AICS stock with Viper skins, badger knock off bolt knob with butter smooth action for me to drool over. Putting mine on the table next to that was a picture I regret not taking. (like a before and after photo).
He was willing to work with me and do a quote. I felt comfortable, wasn't jerking me around. I really liked where it was going. I would have even pushed my budget up to 7K or more for the rifle we were thinking. Essentially, he wanted to buy my rifle on the spot and start from scratch, which was what needed to happen.
Then it went a bit sideways. I kept telling him my timeline is a year if that is what it takes. I also wanted to start asap on the build so we can have it done early next year. But he kept trying to sell me someone elses rifle. Kept sending me photos of used or pretty much new rifles that weren't what we discussed. Even stepped around on the calibers. I thought he wanted to push me in .338 at one point, but he just knew a guy with a winmag that he wanted to sell me. I told him no, I want to build rifle we discussed that you were supposed to quote me. He said no, you'll be much happier with this. It was the AICS stock with thumbhole, shorter barrel, don't know the optics or action and it was sitting in a custom formed case. I passed on AICS a little bit ago, thumbhole didn't work for me and he knew that. He wouldn't let up trying to stick a precision used rifle in my hands right away. But I can't even use a rifle until August, so what's the point?
Maybe I can force things my way, but this is my first ground up rifle. Should I keep pushing this guy or just take my business elsewhere?
