This seems like a strange question, but...

All of the pocket calculators I have seen or owned leave a lot to be desired for hard use. It seems like a pocket calculator with a rugged waterproof shell and a display that can be read in low or no light would be a good idea.

Ever see one like that?

LOL, thats what I was going to say.

Re: Good pocket calculator?

The ruggedized PDAs and Pocket PC's are nice (check out the TDS/Trimble Recon and Nomad - even come in OD Green), but I don't have that kind of cash to spend on one and I already have a pocket PC that is not ruggedized. The battery life tends to be very short on all of these things with fast processors.

The calculator is sort of a backup for the pocket PC. My Pocket PC has 2 calculators on it - the basic one that comes on it and the one in the options on Field Firing Solutions.

Too bad they don't make those old Texas Instrument calculator anymore. A simple ziploc bag will make any calculator rain and dust proof.

Re: Good pocket calculator?

After trying a bunch of calculators in the field, I've found a cheap $5.00 calculator in a ziplock works best. I've also found that I can read a map with the backlit panel from a calculator or a Casio watch. If you're out in the woods with a bunch of pigs or coyotes - its going to be a long lonely night because they will run like hell from the light.

If you're looking to use this in hazardous environment, think about it twice because lights tend to be real bullet magnets. Between a sound out in the dark free fire zone or a light which would you shoot at?

What you choose will depend on the end result/purpose for it and the risks involved.

Just my two cents,

Go to Target and pick a bag full of the cheapies--IIRC they run $1.50 each and are the size of a fat business card and weigh an ounce or two. Place a few in your ruck for back up--and one in your stock pack.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a Recon running FFS. But definitely check before spending. Both Recon and Nomad use Windows Mobile OS and have fast processors. I don't know why it wouldn't work.
Works fine on my IPAQ which has a slower processor.
