So I went to the range last night and came across a Remington 700 chambered .260 that was listed for $550. I told the guy id buy it now for 400 and he said deal, a bit spontaneous but i thought it was worth it.

26'' heavy contour barrel. The serial number checks out to a 1984 production date.

Good deal?

that is a good deal, make sure the twist stabilizes the 140's and if it does you are good to go.
congrats,
cheers.

Great deal. Those laminated stocks bed up nicely. Use a 0.85" front and 1.35" rear pillar and it will put the bottom metal down enough to fit 5 rounds in the magazine. Enjoy.

Thanks for the comments guys! Yes I plan on eventually free floating and glass bedding the rifle. The trigger is god awful, I need to order a timney for her.

As for glass I think i am going to start with a Super Sniper 10x. I have been spending a good amount of money lately so that 10x may be a good place to start.

If it does not like the 140s, run the 120s and live and be well.

Had some customs built on the Remingtons like yours and that laminated stock stock is very stable on the bags and about the right wt for me.

That's a good deal even if it's only for the action. The remington a used a slower twist rate though so it will probably disappoint you if you want to run the 140's. It should stabilize the 120gr match bullets alright though. If it were me I'd sell the barrel (would probably fetch $150 or so), stock ($100-150 on ebay), and the bottom metal and basically have a free donor action.

I thought the same thing guys, very strange. But the serial number claims 1984. Could be a re barrel.

The serial number goes as follows E6489***

It could be that in 1997 is when the .260 started mass production. But i think the 260 started way before as a wildcat but its strange for Remington to chamber a wildcat at the time.

and maybe someone put a 260 varmint taper bbl on a rem 700 action? and maybe put it in a vls stock? regardless a good buy for 400!

Look at the barrel date to get the actual manufacture month and year. It should shoot 142 gr Sierra Match Kings great, mine does. Bed it, adjust the trigger, lap in the scope and it will out shoot you.

So if the barrel was made in one year, and later removed and added to another action, what would the DOM on the bbl tell you?

Ok cool just checked the barrel.

I have a little DS and a bigger CS stamped on the barrel. According to this diagram that should mean my barrel is from 1998 am i correct?
