Is there a difference in the 20" and 24" 5r other than length and being threaded?

I have seen the 24" 5r milspecs actually say it on the end of box. I was under the impression that my 20" 5r was the same but it only says 5r on box, nothing about "milpsec".

Is mine up to par or did I just pay more than I should have for a stainless 700?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Got a Remington 700 5R 20" 308 question

From what I understand the "Milspec .308's" were all SS 24" 5R's with a 1:11.25 twist. Other 700's with shorter barrels and different twist rates are available in 5R but they didn’t get the "Milspec" designation (not labeled on the box). I also read that they were a limited production series and that they only produced a certain number (although I do not know what that number is). They are also not any other markings on the barrel to distinguish a milspec from a non-milspec.

What you paid for is the 5R SS threaded barrel and decent stock. A pretty darn good rifle out of the box. Another 4 inches of barrel and you would have gotten a few extra letters on your box label but that’s pretty much it.

I have no idea why they label any of them as being "milspec." Even if they're talking about just the barrel the profile is all wrong. The only difference between the 20" and the 24" 5r is 4" of barrel and threads. Fantastic guns, but calling these rifles "milspec" is purely a marketing ploy, unless they're ONLY referring to the 11.25 twist 5r rifling which both rifles do in fact have.

The remington 700 barrels are made by cold hammer forging, and the dies cost a lot! I doubt they have a different pattern than the 1-11.25 twist 5R "milspec". Perhaps there is a difference in QC, chamber reamer, obviously there are different lengths and profiles, etc., but internally they should all be the same.
