some hogs have diseases, and no you are not required to harvest the meat of a feral hog. I will not eat any hog over a certain weight for health reasons. Others will and have eaten hogs over 300 pounds.

Once you have seen the destruction they unleash on crops, you no longer see them as a game animal.

I'd be more worried about wasting $2.50 a shot on them.... If you don't have hogs in your area, or have never seen the damage they can inflict on land then I can understand viewing them as a "game" animal. The not only carry diseases, but reproduce so quickly that you have to eliminate %80 of the population every year just to maintain the current numbers. My theory, shoot all you can, unless you enjoy having all the money you put into crops or food plots thrown out the window, because they can and do destroy everything in their path.

I wouldn't eat prarie dogs...'bout what these things are sometimes. Just vermin.

That said when I shoot a little fat one they are tasty.

Feral swine can carry lots of nasty crud, two of my favorites are brucellosis and pseudorabies. Safe handling and proper cooking go a long way. However, the reality is that feral pigs are a burden on the ecosystem and need to be destroyed, not hunted for sport. I look at killing feral hogs like spraying ants in the kitchen.

Re: GOT SOME REVENGE ON THE HOGS TODAY 50BMG vs HOGS

No need to burn if you use enough tannerite. One pound certainty isn't going to get it done though.
The farmer that owns the place we hunt buries them for us the next morning.

Thanks for that information. Those are some nasty diseases. I'll remember then if a go hog shooting, not hog hunting anymore.

Let us know how the diseased hogs taste or how the coyote is for table fair. Not all animals are killed for meat, they are killed to keep down the numbers and to limit the damage to crops, stock and wildlife.

Re: GOT SOME REVENGE ON THE HOGS TODAY 50BMG vs HOGS

Definately disease carrying vermin, I would gladly trade the hogs for prairie dogs, or any other varmints for that matter. Sometimes the meat is good to eat, but we usually wait until it gets alot colder. I'm not one for killing just to kill but these hogs are destroying my pastures, tearing up my fences, and running off the game. Definately like stomping roaches, just takes alot more to squash em!

Re: GOT SOME REVENGE ON THE HOGS TODAY 50BMG vs HOGS

My family fights to kill these beasts all the time. They tear up farm and ranch land here in Texas. Overnight a big group of hogs can tear up 15 or more acres of crops or cattle range land. Have you ever driven a vehicle over a piece of land where ferrel hogs have torn it up? They will root up holes 2 feet deep and big enough to put a pick up in. Also I would like to see your face when you bite into a piece of pork from a 400 or 500 lb. wild hog. The meat from a big hog is tough as boot leather. This is good meat when coming from a small hog. This is not pork from your grocery store. If you want to conserve the meat and eat this stuff, I can hook you up. I will kill it, you clean it and eat it. Then you will change your tune.

I guess it was either get popped in the head with a .22 in the pen or popped in the head with a .50 a couple hours later?

I gotta wonder how 5lbs of tannerite would do against a group of hogs under a feeder?!?!?

And if is from an older boar it will have a flavor that you will remember, and wish you could forget, for a very long time.

Re: GOT SOME REVENGE ON THE HOGS TODAY 50BMG vs HOGS

A friend of ours had to scrap his entire corn crop last season due to these hogs. I can see why some farmers really buy some nice rigs to kill them with. I cant imagine why anyone would eat one of these. After you see one up close, you wont want to even touch the damn thing.

Re: GOT SOME REVENGE ON THE HOGS TODAY 50BMG vs HOGS

i have been planning a hog hunting trip to South East Texas since last April. My dad works honey bees down there for about 3-4 months in the Chester, Woodville, Livingston area. Not sure what I will find around there, but if anyone is familiar with popping hogs the area...drop me a line.

Re: GOT SOME REVENGE ON THE HOGS TODAY 50BMG vs HOGS

I wonder what would happen if you left a bucket with about 10 lbs of nuts and bolts and 10 lbs of tannerite with some corn thrown around it and then wait for these F'ing hogs to show up?

LOL

Re: GOT SOME REVENGE ON THE HOGS TODAY 50BMG vs HOGS

You better be a good distance away- at least 300 yards. I know a rancher that occasionally uses 5 gallon buckets filled with tannerite surrounded by corn to decimate hogs. To say it's a BIG BOOM is an understatement. You better be way the hell back from it with hearing and eye protection, body armor wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Yep they were in a Snare for sure. I don't care for pigs either but to shoot them while in a snare is a bit pathetic..

Re: GOT SOME REVENGE ON THE HOGS TODAY 50BMG vs HOGS

I watched a good show on the Discovery channel last week called "Pig Bomb".

http://dsc.discovery.com/videos/pig-bomb-super-pigs.html

Basically it talked about how in the last decade the feral pig population has exploded, they are growing to larger size and are becoming more aggressive. I'm not for killing just for killings sake but these animals are in a different catagory. I seem to remeber the program said that pigs are able to reproduce at 6 mo. and can have 3 litters in 14 mo.
