Well, I shot out at Tac Pro today in Texas.

You have to qualify to shoot the 1000yd range.... It was funny. I wasn't a member till today so, I signed up and qualified today.

they don't have pit service but, they have a good berm and you can set out steel etc. Nice range and GREAT people from the experience I've had so far.

So.... I was still working on a load for my rifle and, I took a chance... I ran the bullets into the rifling after being about 30 1/1000 out... I put the 220 smk .010 from the lands... backed off the charge a LOT and I was still high on pressure BUT, the fucking thing was shooting lights out. Shit, I was only up 26.25 from a 100yd zero. LOL ( hot ammo )

We had about a 7-10mph wind going to 2:30 o'clock. I hit the mother load on the reloads. They shot well.

Qualifying was simple but, after that, there were a lot of 4" skeets that were sitting on the berm at 1000yds.

Got to figure a 3/4 value 10mph wind that changed from 7 to 15...

Great day. I killed 4 skeet in 9 rounds and, I'm a newbie at 1000yds... not a newbie at shooting and not a newbie at reloading but, still very new. It was a nice steady wind but, you had to pay CLOSE attention to the mirage.... wait... or shoot...

I used to shoot the national match course and, I am not at all what you'd call a NEW shooter... I made the president's 100 in 1984.

Truth be told tho... If you hit close to a 4" skeet you will likely break it.

Hey those were my clay's. Hahaha, me and a buddy put those there Saturday, it's actually 1010yrd so make sure you correct your field data.

Smashing clay's at a 1000 is fun shit.

Re: GREAT day today 1000yd report

Can't wait to get out there and do it again!

I've got to work on my loads a bit.... I can't keep loading them that hot. They were shooting really well though. Not sure of the velocity but, hell, I was only up 26.25 moa from a 100yd zero!!!

I had to have those 220s going almost 2900fps. Much more than that and I'm sure you get a kaboom! I sure wish I weren't seeing pressure at that charge. Primers are getting flat with a moon crater. They were ok to shoot but, I don't want to make that a normal thing and, I'm not sure if I can load the brass again.... the primers are liable to just fall out. LOL

It sure was drilling the crap out of those skeet though. LOL

LOL, you won't hit every one and just your cheek weld on the stock can move the cross hairs from one side of the skeet to the other. LOL You could see and put the crosshairs on them without too much issue on 22x but, you had to pay close attention to the wind/mirage. Watch, watch, watch... mirage picks up, favor the left side etc. I had about 3 minutes of wind on my 300wm shooting those SMK 220s about 2885fps.

It would have been a LOT harder hitting them with a 308win... they just don't buck the wind like that 220 will.

Re: GREAT day today 1000yd report

I haven't heard anything but, that might be fun if they do one.

I did hear that they're going to put up a 1600yd range, however. ( soon, I think )

I do believe I can keep those 220 SMKs supersonic about that far.... I want to try it!!!

What does a membership cost?
Semper Fidelis,

200.00 annual. I'd rather not pay anything but, there are only a couple of ranges in the area and, I don't mind paying a little to make sure and have a 1000yd range accessible all the time.

Re: GREAT day today 1000yd report

Here's the new load I worked up on Sunday.

As you can see, I ended up with a .26" 5 shot group.... the one next to it is .31"

The sweet spot seems to be between 73.3 and 73.6gr of H1000 at .010 off the lands for my 300wm.

Are you saying that there are no pits on such a beautiful, flat range?

Re: GREAT day today 1000yd report

No pit service but, the dirt berm provides instant feedback for practice and, if you choose, you can set out your own steel ( or shoot at skeet or whatever.

There is a range within driving range that does provide pit service so, for some events, we go to those. (it's 1000yds too)

I'm pretty much sold on the idea of bringing clays everytime I go from now on. It's easy to see the impacts without a spotter and dope the mirage... it's WONDERFUL practice in doping changing conditions with instant feedback.

If it weren't going to rain all weekend, I'd be out there again.... maybe next weekend will be better.

Re: GREAT day today 1000yd report

Good to here you are having fun getting back into the shooting game. You might mistify some fokes with your body position at an angle.

LOL

I need to get over to your area and do a few of those regular f-class matches to get my feet wet. At the moment, it's more of a scheduling thing for me but, I'll be sending you a PM or two soon to see if I can get out that direction.

I also took a lot of your advice that you PM'd to me on getting the reloading set up.

I'm currently using a collet die and, based on the groups above ( which are the first groups I've shot with the collet die ), it sure seems to work pretty well.
