Howdy from the "Blueberry in the tomato soup." (i.e. a "blue" city in a "red" state) Austin, the beachead for the Californian Marxist invasion of Texas, God help us!
Anyway, I've been a lurker here on the 'Hide for several years and finally decided to register.
I'm new to precision rifles and long range shooting, but have been shooting military-style rifles (bolt-action and autoloading) since the late 1980s.
I'm a little bored playing "Man-Barbie" with my AR-15s and decided to try my hand at building my first real precision rifle. I say "real" because I once built an ersatz L42A1 from a bubba'ed Ishapore 2A1; not a bad little gun but not nearly accurate enough. I only managed to squeeze out 2.5 MoA even after carefully working-up a load for it. With factory ammo it shot a little worse than 3 MoA, but with surplus 7.62 x 51 (mostly what I shoot in my "battle rifles") I was lucky to get 5 MoA, although it seemed to like Radway Green better than the others.
Since then, I've longed to have a rifle that shoots better than I do!
My current build is:
Remington 700 SPS 20" 1:12
Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 Mil/Mil
EGW 1-piece Picatinny base w/20 MoA elevation
TPS 1" TSR Picatinny Steel low rings
I'm looking for a suitable chassis to put everything in and am leaning toward the Rock Solid. I almost scored an AICS 1.0 for $400, but missed the deal (on Texas Gun Trader) by less than 18 hours! I'm driving up to Ft. Worth for the gun show tomorrow, so hopefully I'll have some luck there.
Yeah, I realize that this is probably the most generic build possible, but I wanted to start with "known commodities" and get a baseline before I branch out on my own. I also believe that this strategy will let me concentrate on learning without worrying and wondering if problems are gear-related or shooter-related.
Maybe once I learn a little more, I'll be able to contribute something helpful to the forum that has entertained and enlightened me for so many years.
Warm regards,
-BRAH
P.S. Don't forget to wish your significant other a happy St. Valentine's Day.
