Grendel/6.5CSS Cartridge Change?

I got an status update on my barrel and was told "There is some changes pending in this cartridge. So we are taking this into context". I've searched high and low for any confirmation or info about a change, but have come up dry. Seems VERY strange to me. If there was going to be a change, wouldn't it just be a new round?

Re: Grendel/6.5CSS Cartridge Change?

yes, Hornady ammo is a bit longer in case dimensions and all the
other "clones" (avoid licensing fees from AA) change the dimensions or neck a bit--all ammo has functioned for me thus far but others with custom barrels have experienced problems

Re: Grendel/6.5CSS Cartridge Change?

My Hornady 123 AMax factory ammo does not fit in my function gauge (therefore it will not fit in my chamber).

It's a shame, though I suppose I could pull the bullets, put aside the powder, resize the brass and reseat the bullet.

That said, I should NOT have to do that with factory ammo.

FART!!!!

In anticipation of the final assembly, I just bought 200 rounds of Hornady AMAX off Palmetto State's website (not trying to lay any blame on them, by the way). Any chance I'll get lucky? Will it make a difference that my barrel is being chambered 6.5CSS?

Should have known that price was too good to be true!

Re: Grendel/6.5CSS Cartridge Change?

That is great info from Satern. I'll contact LW and confirm this is what they were/are considering. Seems crazy that anyone would sell ammo that is out of spec (especially Hornady). I guess I need to get a gauge and check what I have.

Re: Grendel/6.5CSS Cartridge Change?

I got my grendel gauge from AA today and checked all 200 rounds of Hornady ammo I have. 60 out of 200 rounds do NOT seat in my gauge with most of them stopping at least 3/8" prio to flush. I will be contacting Hornady tomorrow to see what they might have to say. I'll post the response if I get one and if anyone is interested.

If the ammo seats in the chamber is there any risk to pulling the trigger (AR-Platform)?

If the ammo chambers it should be fine. I doubt those 60 rounds will chamber though.

I ordered two boxes of .264 LBC ammo just to compare it with the Hornady 123's. The Hornady has run flawlessly in my .264 LBC so far. I just wish LB would ship the frickin' ammo. They are as slow as snail. I've placed two calls to check on the order. They say they have it in stock....

Please do.

Re: Grendel/6.5CSS Cartridge Change?

Okay,

After a long pause here's what I discovered. I sent an email to Hornady asking (politely) WTF? They contacted me prompty via email and said they wanted me to ship the ammo back to them for testing by their lab as well as telling me they would do everything to make it right. So far, so good for Hornady.

At the same time I sent an email to Alexander Arms asking if they had heard about this issue. I was sitting at my desk at the office and who should call? It was Bill Alexander himself to discuss the issue. I was expecting an email response from someone like "Fred from accounting", not the developer of the round. He said he had heard that some were having issues with the ammunition, but hadn't considered the possibility that maybe there was a problem with the gauge, not the ammo until he read the description of the ammo not seating in my Sheridan (sold by AA) gauge. He ran an internal dimension check on the gauges he had in inventory and discovered there was an issue with the chamber neck length. Apparently Sheridan's supplier of tooling sent them a (I'm not a gunsmith so excuse the poor nomenclature) cutting die that was slightly out of spec. He also said Hornady's ammunition has done nothing but get better and better, so he didn't think they were at fault.

Bill asked me to send my gauge back for a touch-up on AA's equipment. When it arrived back at the house I checked all the "defective" ammo and it all seated perfectly in the gauge. So apparently the issues I was having was centered on an out-of-spec gauge.

I then contacted Hornady and let them know it appeared to be a gauge issue, not an ammo issue.

Great news for my opinion of both Hornady and Alexander Arms. Both responded promptly to my inquiries and both addressed the issues politely and quickly. Bill actually spent about 45 minutes on the phone with me and came across as very customer focused. He said that he will fix anything that is suspect from Sheridan, even if it wasn't purchased through AA. So if you are having this issue contact AA and they should hook you up.

The real test will be when i try this ammo in my as yet to arrive Lothar Walther barrel which is due in any day.

Re: Grendel/6.5CSS Cartridge Change?

Lapua brass is at min spec and Hornady is at "nominal"---
Satern cut their chambers at min spec on headspace off shoulder
and the Hornady brass does not chamber in the tight match chambers--Lapua does----Satern will scrape the chamber on any
of their barrels to chamber the Hornady stuff---1 of my barrels has trouble with about 40% of the Hornady ammo and it works fine in another

Similar experience for my. My son had a 24-inch Grendel upper that suddenly wouldn't shoot better than 1.5 MOA despite tender loving care, strip-down to no copper in the bore cleaning, and the last few rounds of factory ammo that shot between 1/2 and 3/4 inch (yeah, usually just under 3/4).

Easy guy to talk to, keenly interested in putting out the best work his shop can. Since he's from the UK, perhaps I should say he's keen on customer service.
