Gunsmithing GTR action blueprinting video

Re: GTR action blueprinting video

i just ordered the video last week (also his bolt sleeving video). he does a pretty good job of explaining the blueprinting process. my only complaint is the video quality is a bit lacking. as previously mentioned, he basically set up a camcorder on a tripod and did all the shooting himself so it doesnt provide the best angles or lighting. all in all, it does a great job of giving the viewer a better understanding of blueprinting

Re: GTR action blueprinting video

thanks Roscoe, i'm looiking into all of the different methods of action blueprinting because I want to decide which will be the right one for me to use, I am intrigued by the GTR style blueprinting fixture, and am considering making one, I just wanted to see this video in particular to see it in action.
Do you feel your method is superior, or easier than with this fixture?

I'll give you a little background on myself, I've been fixing guns and shooting since I can remember for the most part, I attended Pine technical college's gunsmithing course (wasn't thoroughly impressed

) and was just finally able to order my own lathe, now i'm in the process of reading, veiwing, and listening to everything I can find on the subject.
I don't plan on making a career out of riflesmithing, but I like to stay busy with side work anyway

thanks again, your tutorial is very well put together.

It's the same principle and end result. I looked at Greg’s fixture and started to make one. I also looked at Mike Bryant’s fixture and saw the ease and simplicity of it. Less material and work to make the fixture and it looked like it would be a more rigid setup.

I've had people call me that have the Gretan fixture and after seeing mine copied it. They said that the mandrel in mine didn’t bind up like the Gretan did and that indicating the receiver was quicker. Contact Mike @ Skunkworks and ask about it, he has both and his Gretan now sits on the shelf.

Re: GTR action blueprinting video

With regards to what Roscoe stated, you don't get a better fixture for truing round 1.35" actions. I made the first fixture based on what Roscoe is using and after using it for a while, re-designed the collet that holds the action. My collet is made out of 8620 and each part of the collet that is pushed on by the adjusting bolts moves indepently. This allows pressure to be focused more accurately to the receiver when the adjusting bolts are turned and it allows a lot more rigidity. I also fine tuned the dimensions for the adjusting bolts on the outer sleeve that holds everything. After the re-design and quite a lot of testing, I'm now manufacturing the fixture for sale. I should be able to get the first batch through production about two weeks after SHOT. PM me if you're interested.

I still use the Gre-Tan fixture for Winchester actions. It's in the lathe now with a FN action trued up in it....
