If I was to sell a rifle to another SH member, how does that transaction typically take place? I assume I need to ship it to an authorized FFL Dealer. If it is not a local transfer, how does one ensure the firearm is legally transferred and that I am void of liability for this firearm?

If you ship to an FFL you can rest assured that the firearm will be transferred.
Make sure you get a copy of the FFL licenses your shipping to, along with a copy of your DL and include in the case, box of firearm.
My FFL will ship my firearms to another FFL for a small fee..
    Easy, painless and worry free.

Use FFL EZ check to verify that the license holder to where you're shipping is current and in good standing and that the license copy they've provided is good prior to shipping. Pay attention to FFL's business and ship to address and contact the dealer on your own to give them a heads up as to what you're sending and when. Not required but goes a ways in case of conflict.

I second the “FFL to FFL” transaction because it can be a pain to ship it yourself. USPS, UPS and FedEx all have their own idiosyncrasies and depending on where you live there might not be a convenient UPS or Fedex office nearby.

I send everything USPS Priority Mail. I agree that if you ship the rifle you need to have a file copy of the receiving FFL and verify it on the ATF EZ check website. Make sure the FFL will receive from an individual and email them a copy of your ID for their A&D records.

Some postal employees can be "less than informed" and will tell you that you can't mail a rifle. That is not true, there is no restriction on mailing a long gun. You can look up their regs in the Domestic Mail Manual. If you want to ship a handgun they are regulated by USPS. The shipment has to go from FFL to FFL and it has to be shipped Express Mail. You will also have to fill out their form 1508, sometimes they even want you to fill out a 1508 for long guns.

Depending on how well your know your local FFL, the easiest way may be to simply have your FFL take care of it all, just get them the name / address / phone number / e-mail address of the FFL tha the buyer wants to use to receive it & then bring them the rifle & the case and any packing supplies and have them take care of it directly.

If you're looking for the easiest, +1 for having a local FFL handle it. Once you sign it over to them, you no longer possess it and are free in clear; they log it into their possession and handle the rest.

FFL to FFL is the best. Make sure you insure the item for whatever it will cost to replace it if damaged or lost....do not be cheap.
    Accidents happen.
I work for UPS, I would ship it the fastest way you can afford, I usually ship all of my stuff 2nd day air or Next day air. That way less hands are touching your item....
