I think this is the right place to post this. I was looking to see if anybody else had experience with putting a gun safe in a garage it is the easiest place for me to bolt it down seeing as i do not have a basement. looking for condensation issues and how to combat them i got one of the glow rods for it and a desiccant canister that is good for the size but the beads are changing colors in less than a month. any feedback is appreciated

Re: Gun Safe and location

I would consider that month a reasonable time personally, but then again I am comparing that to the humid Gulf Coast weather. I don't have an outlet near my safe, so I have to use the type that plug into the outlet and recharge. I recharge at least once a week. I have never had any problem with rust. Keep a reasonable coat of oil on your guns and you will be fine.

Re: Gun Safe and location

You're already doing pretty much all you can. You might try putting another goldenrod in your safe to help, but the biggest thing will be regular inspections and oil like head2h2o said.

Re: Gun Safe and location

I kept both my safes in the garage for several years. I had a goldenrod in each one along with a small can of Damp-Rid. I never had an issue of any sort. the Damp-Rid definately did its job, as i had to pour out the moisture on a regular basis.

Re: Gun Safe and location

I keep mine in my garage and have an 18" golden rod in it. The garage itself is not temperature controlled and I live in Kansas. I've never really had any issues with moisture so far and it's a rather large safe, 48 guns not sure about cubic feet. It was the only place I could really secure it, aside from bolting it to the floor, but since I have a basement underneath my entire house, I was concerned about weight on the floor. Probably wouldn't have been an issue, plus I really didnt' want to have to cart it up the stairs and inside!

Re: Gun Safe and location

During the hot and humid summer months I run a dehumidifier near the safe along with a Goldenrod in it. I also use a small wireless weather station monitor inside the safe that tracks the temp and humidity and sends it to a larger unit inside the house. It can be 95 degrees and 90% humidity outside and 85 degrees and 65% humidity in the garage and 80 degrees and 50% humidity in the safe itself. No problems with this set up.

Just checked it this morning after 12 hours of pretty much not stop rain. 64 degrees outside temp and 99% humidity. The air inside the safe never got about 74 degrees and 52% humidity in the past 24 hours.

where could one acquire one of the humidity gauges that you are talking about?

Re: Gun Safe and location

Instead of the expensive and prone to failure Goldenrods(don't ask),a 60 watt incandescent bulb will keep the temp up. I try for about 10 degrees over ambient. That plus some absorbent material works for me. Additionally, put EEZOX on the parts and relax. It be's humid in Mississippi too.

Re: Gun Safe and location

Mine is bolted down to the slab in the bedroom 4ft from where I sleep. Central a/c handles the dehumidification here in Louisiana. I have friends that keep their's in unconditioned shops and garages with G_rods and or desicant...at least one that I know of got a couple rusty fingerprints when his protection failed/lapsed.

What type of fixture did you use for the bulb?
