Gun Safe Storage Capacity Expansion?

I have a liberty Colonial safe and it is at capacity. The safe comes with a rifle rack on the right side that accommodates scoped long guns nicely, but doenst really allow for a whole lot of them. The left side can fit one or two carbines, but cant really accommodate shorter carbines, SBR's, etc. The current config just doesnt work.

I COULD go and make custom shelves, but it seems like a PITA. Does anyone know of any outfit that makes custom shelves or custom safe interiors? Id rather do this before buying ANOTHER safe. BTW, if anyone is looking to buying a safe, listen to the group here and buy the biggest one you can possibly afford. You outgrow these things quickly.

perhaps post a pic of your setup if you don't mind. The best way to maximize space for anything would be organization. Maybe we can recommend something for you.

Re: Gun Safe Storage Capacity Expansion?

Check out Gun Storage Solutions, they seem to offer some good ideas.

I've also thought that the silicon gun storage socks wouldn't be a bad idea. Just place all your rifles in them and pack them into the safe carefully. Just place the rifles that you use less in the back and work your way forward. If you need something that you know is in the back, give yourself some extra time to get to it.

Either way, good luck.

Totally agree about the rifle rods from Gun Storage Solutions. Just staple their heavy duty velcro underneath your shelf and remove your rifle rack completely. Then you can place your guns in rows. Easily double your capacity. I made some wood steps so my shorter guns would work with the rifle rods. Slick setup.

Re: Gun Safe Storage Capacity Expansion?

I use the rods. They work well, but they were a necessity for me since the safe I inherited was not originally a gunsafe.

In fact I just bought the rods and used some velcro sheet I have laying around here.

The bad thing about gunsafes is no matter how big you buy, you will eventually fill it up.

Re: Gun Safe Storage Capacity Expansion?

I've revamped my gun safe interior twice by trimming the existing shelves and building new ones. It is a bit of a PITA, but not insurmountable and it can be inexpensive. The last time only took a few hours. The problem is trying to solve all the problems simultaneously (very long guns, carbines, pistol grips, scopes, plus all the other stuff you might want in the safe with the rifles). The organizer that fits on the inside of the door (depending on make) from Cannon helps. The neat and tidy arrangements sure look nice, but you end up having to take a lot of rifles out to get to the ones in the back. While I have a pretty open design right now, I tend to shift things around depending on the season - the upland bird shotguns are in the back right now, for example.

I have two different rack heights, but I hung the divider between them from the top shelf rather than running it up from the floor and that alone made a significant difference.

Re: Gun Safe Storage Capacity Expansion?

Building a walk in vault is da ticket. If you are building the house, no better time than the present to do so, but you can add one later, just not as easy. Its actually pretty cost effect to build a vault and its not hard to do at all, though it is a project best left to the concrete subcontractor to do.

Storage room almost becomes a moot point.

Re: Gun Safe Storage Capacity Expansion?

Like filling up a safe is a bad thing? Right that would sound like my wife. I bought the largest safe I could fit down the stairs and I either need another soon or reorganize as well. Last thing I want is a over packed safe thats how nicks and dings happen and my guns cost a lot more than my safe. Liberty makes the best door organizer iv seen yet and that will be the first mod. I do have a huge sauna that never gets used thats screaming for a vault door!!!

Re: Gun Safe Storage Capacity Expansion?

My safe has the cutouts for barrels to rest in I do not use them. I just pack in the rifles as close as I can. Then on the other side I put in some of those little metal strips that kind of look like very small ladders. I put one in each corner they use a small metal clip to act as a support location for a small wood board.

Re: Gun Safe Storage Capacity Expansion?

I just took all the racking and crap out below the top shelf. Doubles the capacity.
If a rifle is too nice for any handling marks one can always put it in a gun sock.
