+1 for the Tipton's Best Gun Vise also. For what you described this vice is perfect or at least was for me. You can even go a step further than that one and get the Ultra Gun Vise which is what 's currently sitting on my workbench. It is a bit pricey but that thing is built like a tank.
And 1/4 (or less) the quality. Not a fan of the style but I was at the place that used to make the Brownells vises and definitely far superior to the Shop Fox chicom copies.
