I trimmed my brass to 2.61. And I'm doing a ladder test with H1000, starting at 78 grains and going up to 80 in half grain increments. At 79 grains the cases are filled up to just below the start of the neck. Is this right? My Lyman book says loads shouldn't get compressed until 80 grains.

Re: H1000 and 300 winmag case capacity

It may depend on the mfg. of brass. Different brass, different internal volume. What bullet were they referencing?

FWIW, 78 grains was a *STOUT* load in my WM in Win. brass (which has more internal capacity than my Nosler or Federal brass) and my rounds are loaded to 3.665" COAL. Unless you have a TON of freebore, you might want to start a little lower and work up slow.

Re: H1000 and 300 winmag case capacity

I'm using Winchester brass. 3rd fired. Trimmed to 2.61. And only neck sized with a Lee collet die. I tested 74-77 grains and got groups over 1 inch. I'm working up a hunting load with 200 gr Barnes LRX bullets.

My gun shoots under 1/2 moa with R22 and the 208 Amax.

Maybe I'm expecting too much accuracy with the LRX bullets? When I shoot regular Barnes Triple Shocks I get sub moa groups.

FWIW, my Lyman book says 80gr for max load. So I should be safe right? OAL jammed in my gun is 2.916 from the ogive

Re: H1000 and 300 winmag case capacity

I was using the 208 Amax in my load also. I have zero experience with the Barnes but have friends that use them and said they can be a bit finicky. The 200 grainers will support a little more powder. For some reason I thought you were working up an Amax load.

Is thqt 1" group 3, 5 or 10 shots? If it's a true 1 moa group, you may be just obsessing about this too much. 1 MOA used to be considered fantastic hunting accuracy. There are MANY factory rifles that won't shoot true 2 moa groups (although they've been getting better). Do some calculations and see how far out 1 MOA accuracy will give you a kill zone shot with your comfort level behind the rifle. You may already have a load that is sufficient for the distance you'd be confident making the shot.

5 shoot group. But shooting groups bigger than an inch at 100 yards doesn't give much confidence in the load, when I know my gun is capable of much better performance.

Does anybody have experience using up to 80 grains of H1000? R22 is awesome in my gun. I'm not to impressed with the H1000 so far

Re: H1000 and 300 winmag case capacity

My load is 78.3grns in a virgin Win case and it's pretty full and crunches a little with the 208 AMAX but no pressure signs and shoots great. I know people who have shot with up to 80grns with that weight bullet but work up slow.

Re: H1000 and 300 winmag case capacity

Have shot it in a .300 Win. with a 190 Berger up to 81 gr. but it's a very odd rifle. It seems this rifle doesn't produce much for pressure. Every load I've tried has ended up a ways over book just to get velocity. The berger load is compressed, and at 80 gr. with a 208 A-Max it's pretty compressed too. I'm certainly not recommending what I did........ But I'm sure in some certain rifles it's been done.
