H1000 or Retumbo for .300WM?

Re: H1000 or Retumbo for .300WM?

I have run both, & I like H-1000 better, only because it measures easier in my trickler, & seems to be a little cleaner. I was able to get the same velocities from either with almost the exact same pressure. Neither outperformed the other in velocity, or accuracy.

Re: H1000 or Retumbo for .300WM?

H1000 is what I use with that combo and it works great.

Re: H1000 or Retumbo for .300WM?

76gn of H1000 with the 208gn A-max works great out of my 26' 300wm.so heares one more for the H1000

Re: H1000 or Retumbo for .300WM?

I have used H1000 with 190SMKs as well as 210SMKs and I have no complaints.

With 190s, I guess that I am getting about 2750 or so with 76 gr. I haven't chronied them yet, but my guess is based on my bullet drop out to 1000 yds. 2 weeks ago I was scoring consecutive hits out to 1000 with this load. I think I can probably go almost 3 grains hotter and get about 2850, but this is just an estimate. WIth 210s, I have tried 74.5 grains, and they are a bit slower, but they were clearly under charged. I loaded some with 75.5 grains, so I'll see how they perform.

Re: H1000 or Retumbo for .300WM?

I'm running 2950 with a Krieger 26 inch barrel with 190 MK and 79 g H1000.

Re: H1000 or Retumbo for .300WM?

It seemed like H1000 was more popular when I looked for data using the 208 AMAX and 200 Accubond.

Even so, I decided to give Retumbo a try using the starting load from Hodgdon's website. I haven't shot those yet, but if I can't get decent groups I'll try H1000 next.

Re: H1000 or Retumbo for .300WM?

I guess I am the lone wolf here. I run Retumbo with the 190 Bergers in my 300 WM.
Retumbo is quickly becoming my favorite powder. I use in everything from 25-06, 6.5-06 AI, 7 STW, 300 WM

Re: H1000 or Retumbo for .300WM?

i agree with retumbo. i run it in my 25-06 also with 110 accubonds and he scream and group awesome. i have yet to try it on my 300.

Re: H1000 or Retumbo for .300WM?

Definitely H1000. Use CCI 7.62 primers in the white box. They work best. Twice as clean as retumbo. +1 on 76g with the 208 Amax, and also 80 for the 165 for muley's and 84g for the 150 sst's or gmx's for whitetails. Burns really clean. BR2s will work almost as tight if the CCI 7.62 primers arent available locally.

Re: H1000 or Retumbo for .300WM?

I didn't find much realworld data for 200gr bullets and Retumbo so I figured this might help someone.

Tikka T3, 300 Win Mag, 24" barrel
-200gr Accubond
-new Rem cases (plain not nickel)
-CCI LR magnum primers
-3.35" COAL (fits mag)
-0.002" neck tension
-Retumbo
-Chrony Alpha

76gr ---> 2580fps (<span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="text-decoration: underline">73gr</span></span> is Hodgdon starting load)

78gr ---> 2658fps (this is Hodgdon <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="text-decoration: underline">MAX LOAD</span></span>)

80gr ---> 2800 fps (<span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="text-decoration: underline">EXCEEDS Hodgdon MAX LOAD by 2gr</span></span>)

Note that Hodgdon lists the start load at 73gr (2703 fps) and max load at 78gr (2872 fps). I think they recently revised the velocity figures because I recall the 78gr load giving close to 3000 fps on their website just a week or two ago.

I started at 73gr and worked slowly to 80gr. I didn't include all the data to save time typing. Bolt lift and extraction were easy with all loads.

At 79-80gr, the primers just barely show signs of cratering. Factory 180gr Core-lokts show more cratering than the 80gr load above. No signs of primer flattening.

Recoil is very mild with the above Retumbo loads. Factory Core-lokts seem to have much more recoil, and higher recoil velocity. These Retumbo loads feel more like a 30-06 than a 300 magnumb.

Case necks 'seemed' more smoked with less than 79gr. At 79gr and above, the necks appear cleaner but still have some residue.

Note that above 78gr, the load is highly compressed(crunch). I used a funnel and weighed each charge. I did not use an extended drop tube.

I don't recommend that anyone try these loads without working up slowly. 80gr is a lot of powder at 3.35" COAL, but the rifle has a quite a bit of freebore. Velocity is reasonable, but I have no idea what the pressure is.

Some may wonder if my rifle shoots slow. I have shot the factory 180gr Core-lokts at 2965fps. Remington advertises these at 2960fps so I think this particular rifle is within the normal range. And my chronograph appears to be functioning fine.

Jason,

Just for reference, my Tikka 300wm is launching 208 Amax's at 2860 from a 22" barrel using H1000. I was getting 2950 easily using RL22 and 200smk's in the 24" factory tube.

You might be leaving something on the table by using Retumbo... not sure.

Re: H1000 or Retumbo for .300WM?

Thanks for the info John.

I've got several pounds of Retumbo for a different rifle (now gone) and was hoping that I could recycle the Retumbo in the 300 Win. I agree that there's some velocity gains to be had with other powders but I figured I'd better test the Retumbo before I buy something else. I think I'll try H1000 next.

Re: H1000 or Retumbo for .300WM?

FWIW,

Anything that gets hit with a 200g Accubond traveling 2800 fps. is probably not going to notice the difference. So no feeling bad about all that Retumbo.

For me, I'm stretching the legs out to 2k and beyond and would like every fps I can. I'll probably go back to a 24 or 25" barrel next time.

John

ETA: I just noticed "new Remington cases". You may pick up some fps when they're fire formed as some of you energy is going into moving brass.

Re: H1000 or Retumbo for .300WM?

John,

I'm thinking the same thing about the 200gr Accubond at 2800 fps. I thought about trading some Retumbo for H1000, but time is limited right now with elk season starting next month and a mule deer tag right after that. Black bear season starts in a couple of days.

I ran some numbers with JBM earlier today and increasing the muzzle velocity to 3000fps would extend the effective range of this bullet by about 100 yards (based on 1800 fps min velocity at impact). This essentially becomes 700 yards vs roughly 800 yards. My goal with the Tikka was to have a solid 600 yard rifle for targets, deer, and elk.

I wonder what the case life, barrel life, and bullet integrity at closer ranges would be comparing the 2800 fps muzzle velocity vs 3000 fps? Seems like the lower velocity would be gentler on the barrel and cases, but I don't know if this would necessarily be true.

Re: H1000 or Retumbo for .300WM?

If it shoots the lights out, I'd run with it.

My hunting load is 71 gr of RL22 behind 200gr AB's and they'll stack one after another into the same hole, but they're only running about 2850. Could they go faster? Sure. But who cares. I'm NOT going to shoot an elk at 2k (or 1k for that matter).

This is NOT the time of year to be doing load development (my brain is a little schizo because shooing LR is as much of a priority to me as hunting). Every range trip should be solidifying your platform and making sure you, the rifle and the load are ready for that split second shot.

Good luck!

John

Re: H1000 or Retumbo for .300WM?

I running 80.5grs of H-1000, CCI 250 and Accubonds 200grs at 2935 fps out of my Savage 112 BVSS in 300 WM. The load is hot by Nosler manual standard but I have no signs of pressure so far. This load is good for an average of 0.5 MOA out to 500 yards.

Here's a photo of a moose shot at 504 yrds with that load in the Fall of 2008:
