How sensitive is H1000 in regard to temp.? I use mostly Varget and literally love it. Have started loading for a Buddy's 338 Lapua and having some strange issues on velocity, and the only thing that makes any sense is the temp change from the early morning (35 degree F) to ammo being in a warm truck that afternoon before being shot. Have you had any issues with H1000 in regard to temp.? Thanks krw

+1

It has been very stable for me.

Re: H1000 sensitive to temp?

I had a strange occurance recently with it. I'm working up a load and had decided on 89.5 grains when shooting in 15-20 degrees. Went out with the same charge with the temp near 40 and the bolt lift was difficult and it got very difficult once the bolt got to the cam on top. I'm heading out again today and it'll be around 40 this afternoon. I had previously shot my ladder test up to 90.5 grains of powder with the bullet jamming and the load at 89.5 with bolt resistance, had the bullet 0.040" off the lands. Only thing I can attribute it to is the temp. I'll report back this evening what I see today.

Re: H1000 sensitive to temp?

Its been generally pretty stable for me in the desert year round. Meaning I run roughly the same load when its 30 degrees and when its 100 degrees for my 7WSM (Cauterucio 189s at 2,900 fps) and my 338LM (300 gr. at 2,720 fps). I admit I will add a tenth or two if its cold out to buy back some velocity loss....

I have found different lots of H1000 have different burn rates. Mine may be a fast lot, as my 300 gr. 338 load is only 89.2 grains (mag length) and I hit pressure at 90+ gr.

Re: H1000 sensitive to temp?

Like Varget, H1000 is part of Hodgdon's Extreme line of powders and is pretty temp insensitive. I have found that to be true in my experiences.

Re: H1000 sensitive to temp?

I have not had any issues with H1000 and have used it since it hit the market. At one time I used IMR 4350 in my magnum rifles and tempature did effect that powder but not the H1000 and I am using it in hot and cold temperture swings.

Re: H1000 sensitive to temp?

Every powder has its limits and a 30 degree swing will challenge any powder, but H-1000 and 300 grains over a 338 Lapua or Edge has a very long sweet spot. Run an OCW and you will see what I mean.

If you want speed above all else it isn't the choice, but I'd much rather give up a little speed for consistency.

Re: H1000 sensitive to temp?

I have shot lots of it and plenty of different lots and it has been consistent from lot to lot. Never had to change my load and DOPE has always matched good enough to not worry about it. Also been very good with the extreme temp swings we SD up in WY. 90-100 degrees in the summer and as low as -20 to -30 in the winter. Don't do much shooting in sub zero temps but do plenty at 15+ and it has done well in those ranges.
