I’m looking for suggestions for a hand held thermal scanner to PID coyotes out to 400-500 yards. I’m using a Trijicon MK3 60mm Hunter. It doesn’t have to have the image quality of the Trijicon, just want to know what I’m looking at.

I know you said “PID”, but you can get away cheap settling for detection at 5-600 yards and using your 60mm Hunter for PID.

I can’t truly PID a ‘yote at 500+ yards with my Skeets. You’ll want something with some reach/magnification.

What's the budget? if you can swing it, the pulsar binos are 2.5x and have a lrf.

Shooting out to 500 sounds tricky with the mk3 due to lack of reticle utility - what's your trick? I've got some of the reticles subtensions figured out but it's an ass pain. Wish it had a normal reticle

I second Jeffl838s comment on the Pulsar binos....I use the Helion 2 which has the same 2.5 base mag and it rocks as a general scanner in the open or in the woods. But at distance....say over 300 yards....I go from scanner to the Mark 3 60mm for positive ID. Helion is just to let me know something is out there from afar.

I have used Flir, Pulsar, and Bering Optics for scanners over the last 3 years. The best image while still having a good FOV and good PID has been the Bering Optics Phenom. I just tested one a few months back, and it was so good I sold my Pulsar Helion XP50 immediately in preparation to buy one. Now, Bering is telling me they are releasing a Phenom 640x480 12μm with an even better image. Night Goggles is planning to start carrying this 12μm model in about 3 weeks. The following video was captured with the 17μm 640 x 480 Phenom and it still is very good. The Phenom has a ton of compression on the video so the view through the eyepiece is way better. The Phenom has a 4 year warranty. You will be amazed at the image quality of this thermal.
