F T/R Competition handicapped

I shot with a couple of handicapped shooters at the Nationals last yr. The only allowance that I know of was that handicapped shooters don't have to do pit duty, though the guy shooting next to me had 2 prosthetics below the knee and was pulling targets. I'm not sure what other allowances someone may need, I guess it would depend on the range setup and the handicap and mobility/ability to access the line. After I broke my leg last yr I was getting to and from the line with a cane and more trips for gear, though I did often get help from some of the other guys.

At the local level we do our best to accommodate any shooter provided it does not interfere with other shooters or jeopardize safety. If you cannot shoot prone, we would allow you to use a bench, for example. The NRA can also be contacted to get an medical exemption so the shooter would be able to use a bench and still get a classification and so on.

You did not give any details of the handicap, so, of course, I am simply giving a general answer. Many of our shooters are older and have various challenges and they are infinitely resourceful in coming up with things to help them overcome these challenges and still shoot within the parameters.

I do not shoot NRA F Class anymore, mainly because I am not physically capable of shooting from the prone without considerable discomfort and fatigue. I don't ask for accommodation, and don't know whether any is available. I simply don't wish to impose my limitations of the other shooters. That's my choice, nobody else's.

Our local club hosts something a lot like F Class, but at shorter distances, and permits a separate scoring class where impaired shooters may employ the bench. It's not F Class, but it permits a similar target size challenge while allowing for diminished physical limits. I'm not sure I like to consider myself as handicapped, or how others feel about it; but my potentials these days are clearly subject to some genuine physical limitations.

Bob Depp, Johnny Depp's uncle, has some severe disabilities and still shoots very very well. I think stroke related - very little use of his entire body - has no feeling in his hand - uses a mirror to find the trigger - and still shoots some tremendous scores.
