Nothing earth shattering here, but something I've found useful. Sharpie came out with a silver marker a while back. It appears white on black objects. Works great for numbering/initialing black mags, black gear bags, putting a reference mark on a black rifle, etc... If you want to change something, just like their other "permanent" markers, Gun Scrubber will take it off.

I've been using a silver sharpie for ages to mark scopes, mounts, and such just like you've been. I keep one in my optics mounting kit in addition to one stashed in the drawer of my work bench. Elmer's paint pens work pretty well also and they come in a multitude of colors for different uses. I've used them to color in roll marks, mark gear, highlight front sights, etc...
