Many thanks. I'm the original buyer of the return stock from McMillan and the Unertl from CMP. Got the mount from twomanattack. Found the 6 digit doner rifle on Gunbroker. Interestingly, the stock came with matching numbered trigger guard and bottom metal. I haven't had the rifle out yet to see if GAP renumbered everything to the rifle.

Heading to the range to zero the scope. I knew the LOP was gonna be long so I mounted the scope as far back as possible but dang! Don't know if I can get right without going prone.

It should be shot prone either off a pack, fat bag or something similar (ive seen folks use improvsed tripods with a bean bag for the rifle to rest on).

Shooting from a bench is unnatural.

Let us know how it does…

Very cool Jrb congrats. I'm hoping to get to the range and zero the Unertl and break in the barrel. Was reading the Unertl instructions and it's BDC turrets supposedly are for 175gr bullets. I would think the 1 in 12 twist barrel would be better suited for 168gr.

I'll bring both weights to the range and post pics.

It is for 175 smks. I think running around 2600 fps. I need to figure that out also. Good luck hope it shoots great.

The 12 twist will have no problem stabilizing 175 smks. My M40A5 is good to 900m+ with them.

So here are the results of 1st range trip.

GAP recommends shoot-clean after each round for 10 to 20 rounds until accuracy comes in and copper fouling gets less. I've never been a believer in breaking in match Barrels but hey what do I know. So I started the recommended process but the barrel never showed any copper fouling on rounds 1-7. Must be a good barrel. I got a rough zero on the Unertl by trial and error and dang it's sensitive to small adjustments!

Luckily focus and parallax were pretty much spot on by the Marine that had it which is good because I don't have a parallax wrench.

I didn't bring a chamber swab/mop to the range and I know the chamber was wet from all that Hoppes #9 which I attribute as the cause of a couple popped primers with ejector swipes. I was shooting my standard load of 175gr SMKs over 45gr of Varget. I fired 2 groups of 5 and a third of 165gr SGKs. The SMKs went to .621 and .436 inches excluding the over-pressure flyers. The SGKs went .978 inches. I expected the SGKs would open up some then I noticed the Unertl had slid to the front of the mounts so I stopped shooting to avoid damaging the scope. I sure wish I could get a torque wrench on the ring acrews! Who ever designed that system needs a dick punch! Probably dead now. Anyway here are the pics. I think she will be a shooter once sorted out.

That is some amazing QC by Federal. I have tons of Black Hills brass and 175 SMKs left from when we all competed with 308s so that's what I load.

So here's the a1 at the 800yd range today. Still zeroed even after resetting the scope in the rings. After 20 rounds fired, the scope once again moved forward. I'm afraid to tighten any more. Ring halves are closed so I may sand a couple thousand off to make them tighter or may try rosin. Anyway, the gun shot great. I can't believe Unertl BDC turrets work do well. Hitting center mass on everything out to 800. 13lbs ate up recoil nicely.

Where is that range?

GAP said it was black oxide after the build but I don't know. Before the build they said it would be ceracoat.
