Sure anyone can paint it, but Im looking to see if anyone has done a good long lasting job? I've seen krylon'ed jobs and they look cheap IMO. The one Im going to have is OD green ( has a Krylon job now ), and I'd like it black possibly. Or a brown even...

How easy is it to remove the krylon? I think I came across someone saying to use Citristrip at Home Depot, but that may have been another subject... cant remember

I have access to automotive paint and that would be good with a nice matte/flat clearcoat. But would it bond is the question. Same goes for the Duracoat...

Any and all input is appreciated.

I had one duracoated that lasted years without a single scuff and it was used in the field on shoots.

You wont have any problem removing the Krylon, paint thinner or acetone and a tooth brush will take it right off. As far as getting the paint to stick, its all about the prep work, I would etch the skins with a fine wet/dry sandpaper around 400-600 grit, then clean it good with a paint thinner after sanding, it will be ready to paint.

These where all painted with Krylon using a plastic primer/adhesion promoter called Bulldog, great stuff.

Thanks. I have duracoat here left over from another project. But after thinking more and more. I dont know if I'll have enough for the whole gun. Though mixing it isnt a big deal.

How well does the plastic paint hold up on the skins? Does it rub off fast? How well does the krylon hold up on the barrel? Does the plastic paint go onto the barrel too? Or is another type used?

They sell that bulldog in one place near me in MD and Im deff not driving that far to get it. Maybe duplicolor will have a plastic adhesion promoter.

Most auto body supply shops carry plastic adhesion promoter. The PPG stuff is the best I've used. Had krylon jobs last for years with it.

Re: Has anyone painted/duracoated their AICS stock?

yeah, will do. Im wondering if 91%+ rubbing alcohol or hell. we have 190 proof alcohol here in MD. Maybe that will strip the old krylon? IM worried about the chemical strippers will cloud the plastic too much. Its Green under the paint, and If I repaint it and then want to go back to green, it will look like shit.

Re: Has anyone painted/duracoated their AICS stock?

I had this done by L.T.M(Larson Tactical) about 5 years ago. It's Duracoat and has held up very well. There has been no flaking or damage to the finish and it's seen a lot of use. The light colored part where my trigger hand goes gets dirty, but that's about the extent of it.

I have heard that LTM got kind of flaky shortly after I had them do this, but they did a good job on mine:

Don't use the citris stripon rubber/plastic, I do know it will melt a Tangodown grip

And yes, surface prep is key.

Re: Has anyone painted/duracoated their AICS stock?

Oreilly's brake clean has worked well for removing paint for me. As far prepping that chassis for Duracoat. I bead blasted mine(AI) with medium grit media and the duracoat has held up well. I would be careful trying to sand some makes of stock for painting. The chemical make up of some stocks requires that they be bead blasted and no amount of sanding will get the duracoat or any other paint to stick. I unfortunately speak from experience.
