Hopefully soon, if funds permit, Ill be getting a Remington 700 sps varmint 308. I have the build partially planned, except for a few things.

Specs-
- Rem 700 SPSV 308
- EGW 20 MOA Scope Base
- 6-9 Bipod
- Super Sniper Rings, Low
- Choate Tactical a5 clone

What I have questions on
- Optics
Im am not sure how much I want to spend yet, but I know I cant go overboard on this. Looking for mil reticle, turrets, good magnification around the 14-16 max power range, Id like mil/mil, but right now, im not sure it will be necessary.

-Mag System
Id like a mag system, but is it necessary? Is the extra 300+ spent worth it? Id really like to have one, but maybe I should learn to shoot the rifle first before I go ahead and put new bottom metal on it. I know the savage comes with a DBM system (some models) but Im liking the 700 a lot.

So, how does it sound?

Thanks guys
Shay

Re: Have a bunch of questions

Sounds good Shay. I have the Falcon Menace 4-14x44, FFP, Mil/Mil. It is a good scope for the money. The glass is very clear to my eyes. I will do a track test later and let you know how it does. If you would like to spend a little more on the glass and wait you could get a Vortex Viper PST.

If it was me I wouldn't do the mag system. I wanna mag system also but I don't think it is necessary. I would spend the 300+ on Glass, Stock, ammo, or stuff to start reloading. You could always get a stock re inleted for a mag system down the road.

Re: Have a bunch of questions

Shay,

You seem to have a good start, so I will only comment on the mag. system.

If you plan on doing tactical competitions, then a mag system can be a worthwhile investment. In comps it is not unusual to have to shoot more than 5 rounds at one stage. So while your taking your head off the stock to fumble with shells and reload, the other guys are just banging away.

Anything that let's you concentrate on your shooting is worthwhile in a tactical comp, when your under pressure and sometimes time limits.

For hunting or social shooting, no you don't need it. But even if you just plan to test the waters in a local tactical comp. don't rush out to buy a DBM system. Try your system first, experience will tell you what your really need to buy and what you don't.

Re: Have a bunch of questions

Looks like the DBM will be on hold till I learn how to shoot the thing. Still not sure on optics, but the Falcon is looking pretty good. Where is a website that I can browse the models they have. Their website is always down.

Re: Have a bunch of questions

The 700 for sure, I would suggest a scope that has matching turrets to the reticle. Detach mag IMO isnt all that necessary unless your getting into Tac type shoots etc where reload times will be a concern. Biggest thing to remember tho when buying anything BUY ONCE CRY ONCE..... You will spend 2x as much upgrading slowly.... Wait a little longer and at least go with quality glass as you can always move it to the next rifle
