My Wife and I are going to Maui in January with another couple for their wedding. We have never had a honey moon, or the time for one, so we thought this would be a good excuse. We want to go fishing while we are there, but I am clueless about charters, license's, etc. I need some advice on the subject and also some of the sites that we need to check out while we are there.

oam,
one of the guys on my crew is from Hawaii. We work different schedules so it may take me a couple of days to get some solid answers. Will Maui be your "home base" or do you want to travel off the the beaten path? Either way, I will ask for his advice on what should be seen and done. He and I have talked about this before because I want to go!! It has been a while since we visited this topic but he has outstanding advise. A lot of the "the locals like" vs what "the tourist get" kind of thing. I will ask him and try to get back with you as soon as possible, most likely via PM.

Went there in 2006 was going to fish but went down to the docks and talked to some charter captains and they said fishing was bad so i did not go. also if you plan on doing the drive to hana (sp) plan on it taking all day. It is a one lane road going up and down a mountain. The best thing about that drive there was home made banana bread on the side of the road in little stands it was unbelieveable good.

Thanks, we fly into Kahului and we well have a rental. We are also thinking about chartering a flight and checking out Pearl Harbor. I've never been anywhere tropical, so I will be the sun burnt skinny guy with tourist tattooed on his forehead. I guess the main thing is some R&R with my wife and no kids.;)

The luau in Lahaina is the best in the islands.

I went fishing there in 2005...it was a waste of money, half a day and our boat caught one 10-inch tuna. I don't know if this is representative.

Maui was our "marine island", we spent most of our time on the water. The snorkeling was disappointing, and I think would be for anyone who has snorkeled in the Caribbean.

Oahu is only good for Pearl Harbor. Too bad you don't have time for Kauai, it is the best.

Pearl harbor is a must if he is going to Oahu. I would recommend you rent a car there is so much to see . Just stay clear of Hotel street area

Dude, it's WINTER! The waves are a kick in the ass right now. Rent a boogie board and fins and hit 'em up! I suggest a simple pair of short boogie board fins and a slick bottom board with a invert swallow tail for stability. If you know how to work one for tricks, get a bat tail.
For fishing, just go down to the docks and ask around. The guy who speaks with you seriously is the one to go with. The locals may or may not give you a ration, but what you expect brah, it's Hawaii!
If you do get out there fishing, a nice bit of Ahi belly meat goes a long way hereabouts to get Panty 6 to 'play nice nice'
