In these “Person Specific” threads, I am asking for a sharing of information regarding teachings, accomplishments, anecdotes, first-hand-experiences, and the like. Simply pertaining to the individual named in the title.

I intend for a separate thread for each separate person, and in no way is this to turn into anything other than respectful and pertinent statements and stories about the shooter. If you want to talk about someone not named in a thread, PM me and I’ll start another. At the same time, disparaging comments, wrong remarks and the like, WILL be removed.

This is intended to turn into a compendium of information of each marksman, because not everything is published, nor has everything been disclosed that has since been “unclassified”. Ya’ll know right from wrong, so let’s all make these threads GREAT.

If we are lucky, the possibility exists for “those who are still alive” to add in their two cents. THAT luxury is not afforded very often. Hence why I want this to be kept “on point”. Thank you.

There are several points of the article I would take exception with.
He was a competitor during his time before the war, even internationally, known for his advantage when shooting from positions other than prone. He usually won against others when shooting balloons from standing position.
He also had a modified rifle, which meant a hand-selected shooter for accuracy, equipped with a custom rear peep sight. There is some controversy over what he actually used, rifle-wise, so I'm referring to what I have gathered from the Finns.
There are guys I know that interviewed him before he passed, and learned a lot about the real deal vs. what has been written about.
I also have one of his spent cases on a plaque. It was recovered from one of his firing positions from the battle of Kollaa, where he stacked a lot of bodies in the human wave attacks.

One of the most overlooked aspects of his experience was his Company Commander, who had served in the French Foreign Legion in Africa. He told Häyhä to go work autonomously in support of their unit, with his own sniper skirmish sector.
When you combine his small stature, fox-hunting experience, competition experience, and having a good leader that knew how much leash to let out, you start to see the true recipe for his success I think.
