Hello everyone, my name is James. I have an addiction ;), lately I’ve been getting my fix from 1911 dealers.

Seriously, I have been shooting pistols and small caliber rifles for many years, but want to expand my hobby to include long range precision shooting.

So I am starting to put together an entry level shooting kit. This looks like a pretty expensive sport. So the initial launch will include begging and borrowing kit—I hope my shooting family still talks to me next year. ;)

I am currently in Alexandria VA (NOVA), but will soon be heading to the Austin TX area.

Anyways, hope to see you out on the range.

As long as you don't vote libtard you will be improving that town... Be ready... That is California east... And it's SICKENING

Call the guys at Alamo Precision in Hurst great Texas guys with prices you can't beat and quality second to none... Tell them what your looking for and get a quote

Definitely not adding another vote for Dems in TX. Just a TX boy heading home to be near the family. Thanks for the heads up/info about Alamo Precision. They popped up on the ole interweb search for the area. An endorsement helps.

Pm me if you want to talk more about them or have questions...

Thank you. Still a month or so before I pack out and move.

But in preparation, today I pulled the trigger on a K5700Elite and SK2400BDX. That will give me something to play with until I can get something that goes Big Bang.

Welcome aboard @Jaman. If you're ANYTHING like your twin, we're better off having you aboard shipmate. ☝ Once your settled in I've got some pretty cool Dog and Cat videos to share with ya. You'll love'm. ;)

I am a new member myself, welcome and welcome to TX.

Definitely, I spent too long as a Nuke ELT on an SSN not to like Dog and Cat videos. ??

You may want to look into this just a little bit further before you fully commit..........

Let’s just say that you and @1J04 might just be speaking “different” languages........:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Don't expect to do much long range shooting around Austin. There was a long range venue in Leander, but a developer claimed rounds were leaving the range and talked a local LIberal judge into closing the rifle range. That's what Austin Liberals do. That's what our Liberal judges do.
Austin Rifle Club has a 100 & 200 yard range. That's about as good as it gets.

Well, that’s not promising. :/

Central Texas silhouette association in new Braunfels has a range out to about 700m but you need to be a member. There are a few places that have short ranges, like out to 300 in the San Antonio area.
I plan on spending a bit of time in the San Antonio area, even if my ex lives there. My kids do too, and I know they love to shoot. Thanks for the heads up.

Well, I could dust off the Anshutz and make the best of it. Thanks for the heads up.

cops get like 2 months vacation dont they :)

how much do they get paid?'
Those kind of ideas apparently are very unpopular with the "law and order" types that want lifelong punishments for stuff, but it is factually correct. Especially when you think that many things that make you suddenly an outcast were perfectly fine at the time the bill of rights was passed.
You'll notice however the politicians have been very careful to make sure that crime at any level doesn't disqualify you from political office...

There are folks running around in elected office that couldn't get jobs as school bus drivers, including some in Texas that are elected to posts in the "criminal justice" department.
My buddy said that there used to be a 1k range out near Liberty Hill, but due to libs, judges, and developers, it’s been shut down. It may be the same one that @Rlandry was taking about.

He said that everything else that he knows of is 100-200 yds.

That's the one I was talking about. The write up on the website is written as to make it sound like a temporary closure, but I think the handwriting is on the wall and they are just trying to save the membershipbase.

If you can live with 100-200 Austi Rifle Club in Manor is the best deal in town. Membership is $175 annually for a family and the range is open 365 except for special events, no daily fee, and you can take as many firearms in as you like.
I did a term as Director of Range Safety so I can attest that it's a safe place to shoot.

No good close options out to 1k with Best of the West being closed, but there are a few 600 yard ones (I haven’t been to either of them though).

A bit further out (about an hour and 15mins from downtown) is Austin Gun Club, which is relatively spendy and members only after initiation and monthly fee. Even further out (~2hrs) and where monthly matches are hosted is CCC Shooting Complex just south of college station. I just do matches at the latter, open shooting afterwards, makes for a long day but it is what it is.

AGC is where I shoot. I do a lot of events there also. While expensive, the amenities are more than worth the cost. There is however an interview process, etc. before membership is granted. Not a big ordeal really.

Oh for sure, I'd readily pay the fee which is more than fair for what they offer if I had enough time to make use of it. Especially as it's relatively close to me.

Thank you. I will definitely give it a go. Then find someone with some open land

Thanks for the AGC inside info. I saw the interview requirement. I wasn’t worried, but you never know. As the old saying goes—I wouldnt want to join any club that would let me in.

Welcome to Central Texas! You're moving to a pretty great spot to get into long range shooting. You are within 2-3 hours of multiple monthly club matches... The Texas PRC. One club is based out of the CCC that (has been mentioned), another in the San Antonio/Hill Country Area, and the South Texas guys also host a monthly match - sometimes at Rifles Only. There's also a north Texas club and I think its about 2.5 hours from here. There are a ton of great shooters in these clubs. Find em all on Facebook to find match dates/locations. Also an NRL22 match has popped up in the Seguin/Marion area which is about an hour away. Great practice match! I'm in Buda, so if you're close, maybe we can get a carpool going to some of these matches.

Pretty much killer to watch anything there. Since I sold my vette and can’t road race myself any longer ( just drag race) I just go to watch there F1, indycar, moto gp, watch my friend run Ferrari challenge series. The karts and Audi driving thing are cool too. I’m glad they built a world class track here in Tx. I grew up just outside of Indy so I got to see almost every single kind of racing there at all their historic tracks.

An old Navy colleague of mine is the mayor of Hammond. Been up there a couple of times. And I’ve walked the Brickyard. Totally get it.

A friend of mine, a retiring Army COL, is also moving to Austin. He is a total race fan, and rallies an M3. We might make a couple of trips to the COTA for various events.
