I'll play Devil's advocate here and say that the SKS is functional and simply maintained by know-nothing conscripts in a caliber that has KIA'd plenty of people. It is what it is.

The folks I know who have SKS's like them for their original appearance. If I see another Tapcofucked milsurp combloc range plinker, that's gonna drive me to start drinking on Sunday mornings too.

I am kind of proud of mine. Mostly because it was the first rifle I ever bought (first gun was S&W 686). 1952 Tula arsenal. purchased 1999 for $89, case of ammo was $79.

My father was so fucking pissed when he found out I bought a communist rifle (anything communist for that matter). My uncle (his brother) who is a Vietnam vet (Marine) told him "When you win a war you get to play with their toys". Calmed dad down a bit.

I have had a couple Chinese in the past and they did not stick around long. Barrels pressed into the trunnion, what a joke.

The Russian workmanship is well ahead of China's, but that should be rather obvious.

I traded a bike for a Chinese SKS years ago. At the time I was tempted to go full tard with the plastic parts but I resisted the urge. Made plenty of hits on torso sized steel out to 400 without issue. I might shoot it this weekend just for old times sake.

They are pretty capable at ranges one would not normally expect with rifles that were issued en masse to peasant conscripts. Cue one of the classic Mosin Nagant vs. AK-47 vs. AR-15 jokes here...

420 yards with iron sights. It'll definitely get the job done, that's for sure.

I have two Yugo's I bought when I had my C&R a few years ago, one was unissued and cost me like $180 and the other was a re-arsenaled shooter grade for $100. I also have a brand new, never been fired Russian that I bought from an old buddy who is a VN special forces vet and ex-airline pilot for $200. He had bought a couple ten stick cases of them back in the day. At any rate, they are all good shooters for what they are. I actually still haven't shot the Russian but will one of these days. It is very well made, by the way.

I have one. A WWII vet friend of mine, who was a local gunsmith his whole life, gave it to me for helping him with his yard, and other chores, while he was sick and unable to do it himself. He's now gone, so I guess i'll have that gun forever.

The accent of communism here was a great time to sell. I sold a bunch of commie shit in late '08, including a milled norinco ak, all for stupid money. It funded my new precision rifle hobby. The only positive thing the kenyon commie ever did for me.
