I bought a couple hundred .308 180 grain spitzer boat tail "blem" bullets from Midway a while back. They are repackaged so I don't know the manufacturer, but I see Sierra has a similar bullet. At the same time I bought three boxes of 500 168 gr HPBT "blem" bullets that are also unlabeled but they look and measure just like 168 SMKs.

Will these stabilize in the 1:12 twist barrel that my Remington 700 .308 Win came with?

Joe

You can shoot 190's without any problem from my experience. Not sure how far you can go after that, but your 180's should be fine.

Yes, it will stabilize them. My 700vs with a 26" 1:12 barrel shoots 180 smk's very well. I even loaded up a few 210gr smk's and was surprised how well it shot them.

my krieger 1-12 stabilizes averything from 150 to 190 without any problems and shoots the 175 to 1000 easily.

I think you should be fine, the 175s shoot great from my 20" so I would think that with a decent bbl length, 1-12 should cover to the 200's or close. Good luck

I have successfully run the Berger 190 vld and the JLK 180 long boat tail VLD in a 12 twist 308 in cold weather at ~600’ asl. A few posters here are even using 208 a-max with good results... Best thing I have found is to use JBM’s stability calculator, it’s recommended to keep the rating above 1.4 but I have personally found bullets to work as low as 1.1

Not all 12 twists are created equal. 168s should work fine but I had one Lothar Walther 12 twist years ago that wouldn't shoot the 175/178s unless I pushed them over 2675fps. That was the last 12 I ever used. It was 11 or 10 twists since then on my .308s.

OP try them and you will see. If they don't shoot push them faster but being safe of course.

Rob, My guess is because it was a button rifled barrel. Button rifling the twist can have variances in the riflings twist rate. If the twist wasn't uniform or got slower than 1-12 that could be the reason why.

I agree 100% Frank. That's also why I use cut rifles Bartlein barrels now too ;)
