I have always used 3 dots, and my last pistols has trijicon HDs. I like the bright orange outline for my previous 45. I bought the hk45 tactical, and I don't have one yet, but plan on getting a suppressor in the future. Now I have the option of the trijicon hd (HK111O) or the heinie tactical raised sights (3960P-Q). Now most of my shooting is during the day, and for that, I love the orange HD front sight.
I want a tritium sight because the gun is also my carry and home defense gun. I try to keep everything the same, so moving forward I'll put the same sight on my carry / competition guns (I sold my other pistols). I have had the thin sight blade on my previous fnx-45 tactical and I colored it orange, but it wasn't even close to the trijicon's sight picture.
My dilemma is to stay with the 3 dot sight that I'm accustomed to, which shoots great during the day for me, but I can see during the night, the 3 dot setup may take a split second longer to differentiate the front from the 2 rear. Or take a chance (with not only my time, but training and money) with the heinie sights.
Pros-cons:

Trijicon HDs
Pros:
Big bright front sight for day shooting
Strong tritium signature at night
Previous experience with 3 dots

Cons:
Acceptable accuracy / sight picture while shooting with a can?
3 dots can be busy at night
3 dot may take a split second longer to differentiate dots at night

Heinie tactical slant pro QWIK
Pros:
Only 2 dots to align so a "less busy appearance"
Smaller rear dot so it might be faster at night to differentiate in total darkness (again, no experience with these sights)
Tall so they are made to shoot with a can on
Might be slightly more accurate due to the smaller front sight

Cons:
No previous experience with them
Thin sight blade (which I didn't mind on my fnx45 tactical, but preferred the hd)
Slower sight picture than the big hd dot

My raven concealment holster is setup to accept both sights, and my gun will always have a surefire x300 ultra on it.
Usually I would "try" out the others, but I really want to buy once. My friends have regular trijicons but no one has heinies. Both sights are dependable, but I'm really on the fence on this one. Tried and true (to me) trijicons, or take a chance with the heinies. I know the debate is a dead horse that has been beaten; so what I'm really looking for is the opinion of those with a similar background with 3 dots and who have made the move.
I know I can't go wrong with either, but I really don't want to have to waste time and training if I'll end up with another sight.
I guess it would come down to, if **** were to hit the fan tomorrow, and you needed to choose, what would you pick? Not just for punching paper at the range. I don't need "benchrest accuracy" because this is a pistol.
Also, I've heard some people have with heinie rear and trijicon front? What is that about? Great results? Did one sight need to be shaved or something to get it right? Do they sell the front and rear separately?
Long post, I know, especially because I typed it on my phone, but a dilemma I'm having.

I would also add that I hate dots/tritium on my rear sights. You might try a plain rear and a tritium front just to see if you like it. Much cleaner sight picture and no chance of you confusing the dots. Cheaper too.

The chances of you shooting in total darkness are pretty low (and it raises the question of whether or not you SHOULD shoot in total darkness if you can't even see your sights).

FYI, competition shooters (the good ones anyway) NEVER use 3 dot systems--too much visual information and none of it helpful. All visual attention is on the front sight and the rear sight is just a blur that you are trying to keep the front sight centered in. The light between the front sights and the tops of the front/rear sights is what you balance, not lining up the dots.

I also shoot night matches. With a weapon light on, I easily see my sights. Put tritium front into the black notch and fire. Rise and repeat.

I ended up going with the HD. I couldn't find a good rear sight to match the trijicon hd, so I figured I'll just stay with the HD.
That front sight of the HD is almost like using a red dot for me
I'll just shoot through the suppressor.
