Just getting into my first pvs 14 mounted on a team Wendy helmet. Optics planet has some discounts going today. What would be a good ir illuminator to purchase from them to mount on my helmet? Also looking for weapon mount dual unit to try out. Thanks for your input. I am going to use a pulsar xp50 helion hand held for an ir spotter. Looking at pvs30 and or an ir scope like the mk 3 in the near future.

Depending on what you are trying to do ... pretty much any ole ir-illuminator will work fine on the helmet

I have an old armasight B850 onn one helmet ... and a pulsar L-915 on the other ...

What do I use them for?

1 - Washing out the bloom when zeroing lasers at 50yds and 100yds.

2 - Varmint hunting / coop patrol ... they can light up the eyes of the mice/rats and I can target them with the laser ... if it the rat/mouse is down under a wood pile or in some vegetation.

3 - navigation ... very rarely

So what do you want a helmet mounted illuminator to do ?

Well the "tuned" ELIR-3 ... might be too powerful for helmet ... it is a "weapon" ... so be careful.

And ir-illuminators for the woods have pro and con ... sort of like flashlights in the woods. It helps you see out a little ways ... but cuts off your ability to see farther in to the woods. Hence I do not use illuminators in the woods for navigating.

The big vis light illuminator in the sky ... shines light down into the woods and really lights things up in there especially in the winter ... and head mounted thermal can see fine in the woods .. PVS-14s can see also, depending on how thick the woods are and what sort of overhead light there is.

I don't say illuminators have no purpose in the woods ... but I don't use them for navigating.

I use one of those flexible lights on a Crye helmet and it has white and IR, low and high and I can position it to read a map or work in front of me or whatever. Like a tiny work lamp on your helmet.

Weapons have PEQ's and doorkicker rifles have Surefire V lights too so I have white/IR and I also have one that's handheld like that. I wouldn't want something that powerful mounted on my head, just my work/reading light. And a strobe in the back.

But I almost never wear the helmet now, I use the Crye soft cover, best piece of NV gear I ever bought. You could mount something to it I guess, but I wouldn't.

I hate to derail here but what mount, shroud etc... did you go with for your Crye soft cover? Are you still happy with it?....thanks...

What do you want the light to do?

I have 2 lights: A) SF V1 - low / high power output; White / IR. Low power IR is pretty good for admin stuff, and is generally adequate for most navigational needs. The high power IR is great for blasting through the shadows of the forest. Commonly these are @ $250, but if you look hard enough you will find them for sub $200. My second light is a Princeton Tec MPLS. I use the red light the most and find it very handy. I think both of these are about perfect for what I want them to do.

YMMV
