Hi,

I’m interested in buying this Vortex Razor for my SP10 AR for hog hunting and I was wondering if you guys could help me choose the best reticle option; also, is the power for this scope okay for the intended purpose? I’m not counting on taking out hogs at a thousand yards, but they have this 4x and a 5x; what would you recommend? Here’s the link to the scope:https://www.opticsplanet.com/vortex-razor-hd-gen-ii-4-5-27x56mm-riflescope.html

Best regards, John

First off, I wouldn't order from Optics Planet. You can search this site for many reasons why.

Second, I have this scope with the EBR2-C reticle, which has the open center. I like it, but after looking through one, I'd go EBR7-C the next time. It has the floating dot which I prefer.

And the scope isn't available in 4 or 5x, it's actually 4.5x on the low level.

This scope is a tank, coming in at nearly three pounds.

If I was looking for glass for an AR, I'd go with the Gen III that is a 1-10 power.

It will be much faster finding game with a lower power, but you'll still be able to use the reticle to reach out to far away game.

Thank you; I’m as green as they come and had no idea

I agree that you should get a vortex 1-10 if you want good glass for an ar. Another option would be a nightforce atacr 4-16x42. You really cant go wrong with either. What distance shots are you going to be looking at primarily?

Honestly I’m not sure on the distance, but I’m certain not over 300 yds; I’m looking for something flexible too and not just for piggies, like the idea of the vortex

There are "greener" out there, they usually frequent barf .com :) Based on what you've said the Vortex Gen III 1-10 should be ideal, but they are on backorder most places. I guarantee you will not find a better price than what Scott sell's them for at Liberty Optics, you need to "add to cart" in order to see the price and you will be pleasantly surprised -

Scott is a Hide vendor and long time supporter, he will treat you right.

Now, with regard to reticle, you have a SP10 AR so I'm going to assume .308. Think of the MOA BDC reticle as being designed for speed, BDC reticles are a slippery slope, if they work for your atmospherics and ballistics they are great, but if they don't then you're kinda stuck with guessing, whereas the Mil reticle may be a bit slower, it can accommodate any atmospheric and ballistic. There is no "wrong" choice per se, but make an educated choice, know the limitations and get your DOPE and you'll be happy.

I have a Gen III with MOA BDC on backorder with Scott right now, those who know me on the Hide know I am a huge Mil advocate and not a big proponent of BDC; however, for my SPR rig I opted for speed over precision and hope I can get some good numbers...

This is my 700 in 300 Win Mag I got about 4 months ago and my attempt at sighting it in at 75 yards (all I had to work with at the moment, pretty funny though); I’ve got a Vortex Viper HST 6-24x50 on it, badger ordnance rail, timney elite hunter trigger and vortex precision medium rings lol my elevation looks good judging from my second to last shot (center right), was shooting off a firewood pile; I have no experience with scopes and I put everything on myself so I guess I could’ve done worse!

Any recommendations for the rings for my AR10? If I’m not mistaken there’s another good one by Badger Ordnance, like the quality of my rail from them.

P.S. My scope is in mrad, which I dont even know how to properly use yet, but once I figure it out I’ll probably stick with mrad for at least the next couple scopes; I’ve got the Vortex Ranger range finder, but don’t know what to do with the distance I get and throw my arms up like the French

That's your group at 75 yards? Something seems off, even shooting off a wood pile you should be grouping much better than that. Since you bought a Seekins SP10, I'd highly recommend you contact them directly, I have always found their whole crew to be extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Seekins actually OEM's rings and mounts to Vortex.

I think you would benefit from taking a training class.

once you've for sure settled on an optic you can get just about any rings you want that keep it from hitting the top of the gun. Lower is generally easier to live with as long as it clears everything. I've used lots of different rings and mounts and for an SP10 I would buy aluminum because you're mounting an aluminum scope to an aluminum upper reciever. vortex PMR rings are always a great option and so are the Seekins rings that would match your rifle.

No that’s my Remington I put together pretty much the same day and only shot once so far, I was adjusting the scope after each shot and trying not to jerk the trigger/get as stable as I could

^^^ Roger that, I was hoping that was not your sighted in group size. Yes, guns are more plentiful than ammo right now! Crazy what auctions are going for on GB. You will love your SP10, Seekins makes great gas guns.

Haha Ray Charles could put a better grouping on paper than that; I’ve never even owned an AR before but as a South Paw the ambidextrous controls on the Seekins couldn’t be any better

I would probably get the seekins 0.92" if it were my rig but I like low scopes. I have some 0.93" rings on an AR and half the people I let shoot think it is perfect the other half can't see through the scope at all and say I should've got taller rings. The 1" high rings are a better option for a wider range of people.

I love the ebr7 ret. It's ideal for an AR set up. I have a 5-25x50 on mine. Now mine is built to shoot out a little further than what you will be doing for hogs, but the reticle is great regardless. It's a little heavy but again, for my purposes, its ideal.
