Ok so I just picked up a none accutrigger Savage 10 that I'm gonna build up for long range shooting at steel and possibly deer/antelope hunting. I basically have the build planned out except for caliber choice. I was debating between the 6.5 Creemoor and the .284 win initially but after talking to a couple local long range guru's and my brother I'm also considering possibly going the route of 6mm AI running 115's. What is your guy's opinions?

6.5CM...Really good factory ammo...decent brass if you reload, outstanding ballistics, decent barrel life...what else do you need? I recently bought a savage 10 in 6.5CM...extremely pleased.

Re: help deciding caliber for a savage build

I have a .284 and just recently sold a 6mm AI. The 284 needs to built on a long action to get all you want out of the caliber needing long OAL. Awesome round just does not do well in a short action with todays long range bullets. This is why my SA Remington 700 .284 hasn't been out in awhile. The 6mmAI is an awesome little round and mine was on a Stevens 200 action. It actually shot quite well during fireforming as well. Reason for selling was a surpressor purchase. Great caliber and mine was deadly with 95 Bergers at 3100 fps. But of the three you chose I would go 6.5 Creedmore. I would take a look at the .260 and 6.5x47 again before I ordered a barrel if I where you though. My favorite Savage build I have done was a 26" CBI in .260 Rem.

I did my Savage build in .260 Rem with the 1:8 twist. Shooting the 139 Scenars and the 140 VLD's it is awsome. With Lapua makeing brass for the .260 now, great brass is available without necking up the .243 and turning.
