First, remember night shots through the tube never look as good as the real image, we wish they would.
What we do is to first remove the rubber eye guards from the NV device. the easiest setup I find (I'm no camera whiz like my Director), is to set the camera to auto, cancel the flash and place the camera lens directly behind as close as you can get to the eyepiece lens of the NVD. (They just about touch in most cases). Tri-pods for mounting at least one of the devices helps tremendously.
The other key is to have enough light down range so the camera's auto setting can lock onto the target. Sometimes if it's REALLY dark out there and you do not have any IR illumination, the camera will fight to lock on something for the auto setting. If if does not lock, the pictures usually do not come out well.
Either way, even with a good auto lock we find you have to take many pics to get the best one.
Hope this helps.
