Help! Looking for a consistent chronograph.

Hi All,

I'm looking for a good chronograph and wondered what is working for folks here who reload. Looking for first person information and experiences with the current crop of chronos. Would prefer something affordable but if there is something demonstrably better as in more reliable and repeatable I'm all ears.

I have a PACT Pro (it includes a printer and ballistic program that can be printed out in the field) and really like it. Have used others - Chronys - but not all of them. Fact is, I don't think any of them is "demonstrably better" than others; if one was it would dominate the market! What you pay extra for is features and convience, basic units that sit in the line of fire are inexpensive, others are more costly.

Hi Wasp,

My brother wants to find an Oehler but I think modern micro-controller based chronographs are just as good if not better using just 2 screens vs 3. I have no idea if this is true but even using cheap modern microprocessors to run the chrono with what must be a pretty accurate timebase with good granularity should give you better precision. I'm more interested in reliable readings with minimal impact due to things like setup variation, temp and humidity than a lot of "features." Do I need a printer or extensive shot library recall? No not really, consistent readings and basic calculations are all I really need or want because I log it all anyway.

Does what I want seem reasonable at the CED line's modest prices or do I really have to keep looking for an Oehler to get the precision and repeatability I want?

I've owned PACT and Competition Electronics and I've used Chronys and Ohler. For the money, the CE was the best bargain and the Ohler was the best.

I now own a CED w/IR. On par with the Ohler. Well ahead of the others.

Hi Eddie,

I had sort of thought the CED chronos had an edge for my use but had nothing to base this on except for features I liked and the packaging. What does the I/R give me on the CED, I most likely will only be using it on a covered outdoor range.

YOAG, if you are using it on a covered range and there isn't suffiecient (or the correct type for that matter) light, you will need the IR skyscreens. With those, you can use the CED in complete darkness and still get readings.

As far as the Oehler goes, I would think with 3 skyscreens would be more accurate than 2 since it averages it out over all 3, there would be less chance of a false reading. I don't own an Oehler so I couldn't tell you how it works, but I've never heard anything but good things about them.

I gave up on trying to find an Oehler and signed up for the PVM-08/21 group buy here. I also looked at the CED and if the PVM doesn't work out for me then that is probably what I will fall back on.

I know they are completely different price ranges.
