New Contest Starting Now! This Target Haunts Me
Tell us about the one that got away, the flier that ruined your group, the zero that drifted, the shot you still see when you close your eyes. Winner will receive a free scope!
I have an opportunity to get either a FN SPR 300 WSM in the next couple of months or build a 30-06...for long range shooting. Which one and why would you choose> Thanks.. Range would be anywhere from 600 out to 1100.
Longer barrel life
Shoots 210/208's at 2800fps
Lots o' brass for cheap
Same powder volume (roughly)
Lots of data
Magazine capacity, bottom metal and mags
Kicking magnum a$$'s at the long line with a 100 year old cartridge
On the WSM it has been my limited experience that they do not like the heavier boolets. That may have changed with the advent of RE-17, I dunno. The short action is the only upside to the platform/cartridge. Biotch to chamber down to anything but a WSM due to the rim size when you burn the tube in 1K ish rounds. TO ME: a very SHARP recoil impulse vs a 300WM or 30-06.
Both will do well with a 24 - 26" tube (lots o' powder) twisted 10. I have both and have relegated the WSM to the long range hunting role so as not to roast the tube prematurely. The 06 I pound on.

But in all seriousness i love my 300WSM, it's just a blast of a cartridge!
