I have a Custom Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 featherweight 30-06 that was passed down that is in need of a new scope, but I cant decide what to get. It will be strictly a hunting rifle, mainly shooting between 25-500yds in the pine forest and swamp of north Florida. Most of the hunting is done right at dusk and dawn. My budget is around $1,000-1,200. Id like light weight, zero stop turrets(locking would be a plus), and no more than 3x as the minimum power. Im pretty well versed in both Mil and Moa. I like the Leupold VX-5hd 3-15, Swarovski z5 2.4-12, and the new Vortex Razor HD LHT 3-15, but I am open to other options too.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Woods here are thick with all the palmetto and gallberry. Last hunt I was on I had a 200+/- line of sight and I ended up taking a pig at maybe 25 yards. A good 3-9 will work. I use an older Leupold VXII on my 06, and I could probably run a 1-4 or 2-7 and be happy.

I use a Leupold vx5 hd 3.5-18 for my 6.5cm hunting rifle and it’s great. Good fov for fast acquisition and great light gathering at lower power and high power when sitting in those southeast shooting houses when they give you time to set up.

I'm looking for a scope for the same rifle at the moment (though I think mine is a later model).
I'm looking at the Razor HD LHT, Nightforce SHV, or Zeiss V4 - I see some new reticle options in some of the new v4s.

Out of interest - what bullets and weights have you found work well in yours? I have only had mine about a week and have yet to put many rounds through it. Just open sights at present.
