Help Me Find/Choose the Right Rifle

I would like to buy/build a "tactical" rifle. Budget is $2000 (give-or-take) for rifle alone (no glass). This will be primarily used for shooting groups on paper and shooting steel out to 500 yards (longest range I have access to at the moment). I would like it to be capable out to 700 yards give-or-take (I may have access to a longer range in the future). The goal would be for a 3/4 to 1/2 MOA rifle out-of-the-box with factory match ammunition (I do not reload at this point unfortunately).

Being primarily focused on AR15's for the past several years, I have little knowledge regarding the makes, models, manufacturers, options, and prices of rifles in the mid to long range rifle space. I am ok with buying a base rifle and placing it in an aftermarket stock if that route furthers any of the goals listed below. However, I would prefer to avoid getting into endless aftermarket modifications (triggers, muzzle devices, etc.) in favor of something well appointed from the factory. The "legos-for-adults" thing with the AR platform has been fun, but I'm done with endless tinkering on my rifles for the time being.

Some of the things I would like to find are…

- .308 preferred (I like .308 and I'm already sitting on 120 rounds of FGMM)
- Detachable box magazine preferred
- Good to excellent out-of-the-box trigger preferred
- Height adjustable cheek riser/comb preferred
- Left/right adjustable cheek riser/comb especially preferred
- Threaded muzzle preferred (I will likely add a suppressor in the future)
- Steel or aluminum bedding preferred (I'd prefer not to deal with traditional bedding if I can avoid it)
- Adjustable trigger would be nice
- Adjustable LOP would be nice
- Picatinny rail under the forend would be nice (I have a Larue/Harris QD bipod I would like to continue using)
- Ability to add monopod at the rear of the stock would be nice

Any/all advice appreciated, thank you in advance!

Re: Help Me Find/Choose the Right Rifle

rem 700 aac sd. already threaded and capable of that range and accuracy. get the rifle for $700, spend $4-8 on a good stock, and $200 on a good trigger. That's $1300-$1700. Use the rest for ammo. OR use the rest to start reloading. You can get going fairly cheaply with a lee single stage and make your own ammo. Much cheaper (if you don't count your time) and easy to do.

Re: Help Me Find/Choose the Right Rifle

FN SPR A5M! It comes close, but I feel all of that would be hard to find

Re: Help Me Find/Choose the Right Rifle

Remington 5R Milspec 20" (~1050). Sell factory stock (~850). Timney trigger (~975). AICS 1.5 (~1825). Big Dog steel AI spigot rail (~1964). Everything you asked for.

That's how I'd spend your 2 grand.

Re: Help Me Find/Choose the Right Rifle

5R, 20" Rem. Your scope of choice, but would suggest mil/mil. snipercountrypx.com ask for Scott powers. Tack driver, and will shoot 168's and 175's over varget less than 1/2". Will even shoot Fed Match you have well under an inch.

Re: Help Me Find/Choose the Right Rifle

savage 10BA, good accuracy out of the box, fully adjustable stock, place to mount monopod in the rear of the magpul but stock, full chassis system, barrel has a break on it but it is easily removed. had a suppressor on my 110BA in 300wm not long ago for a demo. the savage accu trigger is user adjustable, they also offer a 5 or 10 round mag with the rifle i do believe. this rifle has most of your requirements for under 2k. i picked up my 110BA here in pennsylvania for 1880$ and have no regrets. the rifle is on the savage web site under the law enforcment rifles section.

Re: Help Me Find/Choose the Right Rifle

Thank you for all the replies!

Any suggestions on chassis I might look into if I end up swapping out the stock on one of the above rifles? I'm familiar with the JAE, ACIS and the Mini Chassis in the Manners stocks, but I have no idea what else is out there and Google doesn't seem to be helping all that much right now.

Researching some of your other suggestions now...

Comes in around 1900 when you consider shipping and you will have a tack driving, beautiful rifle that NO factory gun can come close to.

You will be good to go for around $1600

Re: Help Me Find/Choose the Right Rifle
