I have sent a million 223 rounds down range with little or no magnification and I'm ready to get into long range 308 shooting.

I bought a Rem. 700 XCR Compact (20" fluted barrel) and a 40mm Mark 4 3.5-10X. I currently own a Mark 4 base and a medium mark 4 set of rings.

This is what Leupold recommends for me to use to put it together but I believe they recommend medium because they don't make a "LOW" ring in Mark 4.

I want this rifle to be light and compact and I want the lowest mount possible. Should I go to a different base/mount to go lower? I wanted to go with dednutz mount/ring setup but they only have 20 moa cant for 1" scopes and mine is 30mm. I need some old salty vet to take me under his wing and show me the light.

Re: Help me pick my mount

im confused....how are you using a 40 mm tube with 30 mm rings? do you mean 34 mm tube or a 30 mm tube? why do you think you need more than a 20 moa mount? You can get one with more cant but 20 moa is sufficient.

is your question what picatinny rail to buy?

leupold, badger, nightforce, EGW, Warne, Weaver....and the list goes on and on...

Re: Help me pick my mount

I'm pretty sure he's talking about having a Mark 4 3.5-10x40 having a 30mm tube, but just said it in a different way than how we normally relate those details.

He wants a 20moa canted rail (doesn't say he wants more than 20moa), but wants a rail/ring setup which gets the scope as low to the barrel as possible. Leupold recommends their own mid-height rings with Mark 4 mount he has, but he wants to get the scope lower. What's problematic is that DedNutz only makes their mount/ring combo for scopes having 1" tubes instead of 30mm.

Re: Help me pick my mount

Thank God for twadsw01. Translated exactly what I was thinking but couldn't type. Pinkgun's reply was painful.

-I want low/light/tough mounting system with 20moa cant...
-I have Mark 4 base/medium rings
-I think there is a lower way than Mark 4 medium with a 40mm objective scope
-I am Looking for opinions

Re: Help me pick my mount

Any opinions? Is there a better option for going lower. I've done my research I at least know that I'll need the 15-20MOA cant.

I believe my Mark 4 base is 15 MOA cant and that's fine. My mane issue is getting this scope lower and still having a cant.

Am I wrong in thinking the medium Mark 4 rings will make the scope mount unnecessarily high on my rifle?

Re: Help me pick my mount

Since you already have a scope, base, and rings, mount everything up just snug. Then it should be easy to determine if shorter rings will work better. There's no requirement to use the Mk4 rings with a Mk4 scope if there's another brand / height that will work better.

Re: Help me pick my mount

Well, just something to consider. You indicate you want the "lowest mount possible" but have you considered that with a proper cheek weld on that chasis a low mount may not allow you to obtain a sight picture with that optic? My guess is that you are attempting to keep that 40 mm bell as close as possible to the bore, not certain about the complete profile though.
