Just wondering if anyone has used RE 7 with the 77 gr SMK's with LC 5.56 brass? I know this powder is for smaller grn bullets but i bought a good bit of it for a deal ! Before i wasted time and rounds i was hoping someone had already experimented with it and could give me some insight !!
Thanks

You need stop now and read their website reloading section.

I'm thinking you want a medium burning powder with the heavies, not a fast, almost pistol powder fast, powder.

As you said, it's meant for lighter 35-52gr bullets, not the heavies.

RL-7 223 data, notice anything missing?

If you don't shoot the smaller varmint bullets, sell it to somebody who does. I have a pound here, just to have, but I don't really shoot lighter than 52gr bullets much, if at all.

Thanks Chris
Was just looking for a 3rd or more opinion's on this! had two other guys tell me to drop the charge to 19 to 19.5 grns and would be fine since the load data on there web sit was for 223 rem not the 5.56 nato round! But I didn't wont to risk my 24" RR barrel on these guys word cause they know everything about everything! If you know what i mean ! I thought someone on here may have tried it because i do know a guy that uses powders not spec on some rounds and has awsome results with accuracy !

Let's face it, we can almost get 'any' powder to function in any cartridge if we experimented enough. The question then becomes whether, or not, it's the right powder for the right cartridge using a specific bullet.

I wouldn't think that RL-7 is the right choice for that bullet weight class, but I'm not the brightest bulb in the ceiling fan, either.

For the 75-80s, RL-15, Varget and IMR-4895 are three common ones that handle the heavies very well.

RE7 is far too fast for that bullet, I use it only for 40 or 50 grain loads in .223. As Chris says pick a powder up to the job. Viht N140 is another one to try.
