Gang,

I am running a Remington 700 AAC SD action in an AICS 2.0 stock. I just installed a Timney trigger and adjusted the pull weight to 3.5 pounds and everything appeared well. I replaced the skins and did some function checking and have a real problem. When I close the bolt the gun fires as I lock in the lugs. I loosened the skins and it helped although I don't know why that would affect it. Insight would be appreciated As well as solution!

Didn't they have a News special about this....don't let the Antis catch wind.

And I wish I could help but if it were me I would contact a good smith and start from there we can only go so far on this forum. You will have to have somebody look it over that knows what there doing. Good Luck.

How much did you torque the action screws? My Timney was fine at 1.5# until I torqued it into an HS stock at 65in/lb. front and rear, then as you describe. Backed the rear action screw down to 45in/lb then no prob. My personal experience, not gunsmith gospel. AG

Me personally....I would go back through step by step what i've already done while I was adjusting it the first time...its obvious there was a miss step made....I've adjusted every one of my own triggers and feel confident in doing so but thats just me. Thats what I would do before taking it to a smith...try and figure out what I did wrong...

Re: Help! Remington 700 and Timney trigger

I have two Timney triggers installed in Remington 700s right now, neither with any problems. I would first try closing the bolt as slow as possible to see if it still trips the firing pin, if it does then something is seriously wrong.

The AICS doesn't work well out-of-the-box with Timney triggers, so you may have to modify the protruding pin that moves when the safety is engaged (although I don't know how this could trip the sear on bolt lock up). I have had to file all of mine down on installation into AICS, but then again my symptoms were very different than yours - unable to engage the safety with the stock torqued.

If that doesn't help, I would try increasing the pull weight and see if you can get anythere, if not you can also adjust the sear engagement screw (although it should have been set right from the factory). ** Call Timney if you keep having problems **

Re: Help! Remington 700 and Timney trigger

The issue with the AICS inlet would prevent the safety from functioning. It would not drop the firing pin. IIRC this was resolved in new AICS, old ones still need to be opened up for the pin.

You need to re-adjust the trigger. This time make sure you have enough sear engagement. I have a sneaking suspicion that this is the problem. It will probably also fail a "drop test".

What was the pull weight before you adjusted it? They normally come at around 3.5 lbs from the factory unless you order something different.

Agreed, this is unlikely to be an issue with the trigger itself, more likely it was not adjusted properly and is now set to a dangerously light pull weight. Increase the pull weight and I bet the problem disappears without changing anything else.

Re: Help! Remington 700 and Timney trigger

Thanks for the responses! I backed off the action screws to 57 pounds and took the Dremel and relieved a small area around the trigger shoe itself. All seems to be going well and I have dry fired several times and slammed the rifle butt down and no discharge. I will evaluate this week with live rounds to check status....

Re: Help! Remington 700 and Timney trigger

Final question...does the safety operate? Most AI stocks need a small relief cut on the left side, approx 1/8 side depth and approx 3/16 deep depth wise. When you engage the safety a pin does pop out the left side and needs room. Let us know and happy shooting.

Re: Help! Remington 700 and Timney trigger

I took a Dremel and ground the safety pin down according to another thread on the Hide instead of milling the stock. I must say that things are still functioning well at this point after the torque adjustment.
